I make no apologies for the capital letters and I hope you'll agree why. The following could have gone in "Today's Rubbish Driving" but I think it's too serious to get lost in there in a couple of days’ time. Be alert for the above car.

At approx. 8:45pm, I was riding westbound along Ellersly Road, around 1/3 of the way out from the kerb and certainly no more than halfway (not that it should be relevant) when the Merc (top down at this stage) passed me with inches to spare, despite the road being completely empty in both directions apart from the two of us. Of course, it got stuck at the lights at Western Corner.

I had hoped from the type of car that it was being driven by some retired man who might be capable of reason, so I pulled alongside. Instead, I saw a guy, probably late 30s/early 40s, stubble and a faded-style baseball cap. Even before I said anything, I could see him start to scowl at me. The conversation:

"Excuse me, but you need to give a cyclist as much room as a car when you pass them. <his mouth opens to respond, so...> It's in the Highway Code"

"You were in the middle of the road! What gives you the right to be on the road? I pay Road Tax!" <Yes, he really did pull that one out!>

"No you don't." <Me, still calm; him looking confused, then angry. He then amazingly appears to be reaching for his tax disc or possibly his licence!>

"It hasn't existed since 1937 when it was abolished" <I know, I'm flogging a dead horse by this point>

He then starts to rant and swear before saying, "Do you want me to run you off the road?!", as the lights change. Unfortunately, we're both going straight ahead onto Saughton Drive. Perhaps I should have turned onto Corstorphine Road but I felt safer staying on residential streets even though we were "sharing" them. He raced off and I thought that was the last of it. But no, he was waiting for me (roof up now), just after the Balgreen Rd roundabout (where the old Wheatsheaf Inn was), standing and shouting, "Get off the bike!" I'm not that stupid, so I carried on.

He pulled up behind me at the lights and proceeded to tailgate me westwards along Gorgie Rd, refusing to overtake when I signalled and called him to do so, till I decided to turn up Robb’s Loan at the last second. He thought he could cut me off at the other end but didn’t reckon on the bollards there and I was able to elude him. I doubled back part of the way and asked a pedestrian if he’d seen the car. He’d seen it race past, which told me he was still on the hunt. The pedestrian correctly guessed what the driver had used to “justify” having a go at me and kindly said he’d take a note of the reg number if he saw it again.

And with about 25 minutes of my ride ruined, I continued a shortened run.

So, if anyone sees this car a) please be careful as he’s a headcase and b) get his reg number so I can be prepared if I have bother with him again.

    Thanks.

Crap experience, sorry for you. If that kind of thing happened to me it would affect me for days. Hope you can shrug it off. Thanks for the heads up

    Report it.

    There must be some CCTV.

Bad one. Certain types of cars I sometimes remember to be wary of. Driven by people on drugs, dealing drugs, part of criminal syndicate, Russian or local. Tho when I forget this and try to interact, the story focus relates is not dissimilar.

Black Mercedes, silver BMWs, especially with black glass windows

In the swap over to summer tops I also sometimes forget if in team tunnocks I am standing out too much, tho not as bad as the orange tank top which when worn on bike only leads to abuse.

Will the police log such incidents? They decline film footage without corroboration. I am thinking I must try to remember to get witness contact details if ever in such scrapes again.

@Focus, I live near Craigmount High and there's a person who lives round the corner from me who replaces his car regularly, always getting something ludicrously expensive. In the past fortnight, he's taken collection of a black Mercedes AMG 63. I've never seen him, so I can't say for sure whether he's your man, but seeing as his house is on my regular dog walking route, I'm tempted to knock on his door and see whether he fits your description. Or alternatively, I could tell you where he lives so you can knock on his door, which might be better for me since I have to live near them.

To be fair, with the regularity that he changes his cars for things that cost around £80k+ each month, I can only imagine he's likely to be the guy you're looking for; potentially an overpaid footballer, for example.

Did you catch _any_ of his numberplate?

    "Black AMG Mercedes convertible"

    Can't be many in Ed.

    Easy for police to find.

Though if mkns is correct, owner may be company or hire firm.

The driver clearly has severe problems with self control so I suggest letting the police do any door-knocking or confrontation.

Any idea of the age of the vehicle?

Thanks for the positive responses everyone. Fortunately, I can shrug it off as it's not the first time I've been confronted by people like this. I don't always mange to act as calmly in such circumstances when my safety is at risk but I thought I might have reasoned with him until I saw his facial expression. The important thing is I wasn't confrontational and he instigated both the physical (driving) and verbal abuse.

I'm not into cars but I was looking at AMG models online. Pretty certain it is a 63, mkns. I wouldn't want to stake my life on it but I thought the reg had an "A" or an "L" at the start. Self-preservation overtook any concentration on his number unfortunately. If you do happen to see the reg, please let me know.

I agree with cc that neither of us should do any door-knocking. If I turned up in "civvies" he probably wouldn't recognise me (I had shades on) but all the same...

I know I should report it and even feel I'm doing other cyclists a disservice as well as myself, but we know all too well how lightly drivers get treated if they go to court and I don't want this idiot knowing where I live. I have my initial post saved as transcript on my PC so it's available should I need it.

If I make it to PoP, I may just have a little chat with one of the bike cops there though...

edd1e_h Oh, this car was NEW. Can't say more than that with my interest in cars being more or less zero.

Actually, on the subject of it maybe being a rental, what's the name of that company that hires out luxury cars out Queensferry direction IIRC? I wonder if they have an AMG on their books these days?

Of course, he could have got it from Eastern Western or some other place.

I've just been round to take a look at it. I don't think it is the same car. I'm no expert, but I don't think this one is a convertible. It's a hard top, and I cannot see how it could fold away. The number plate also starts with an S. I'll send you a pm, Focus, but as I say, I don't think it's the guy round the corner from me any more.

Thanks mkns, much appreciated, PM winging your way.

It seems the search goes on for this miscreant. And for anyone who, like me, wouldn't know without looking it up, I should add that although it's a convertible, it's a retractable hardtop rather than a softy.

A very dangerous character - thanks for warning.

I remember hearing that a certain proportion of vehicles do not have correct number plates or use cloned plates.

So even if you think you have someone like that tagged it may still not add up when you do a search.

Number plates with S in them may narrow it down to Scotland (!). I like personalised number plates as the owners help to give you something memorable to report. More of them please!

This might help to narrow down the model, if you want to.

Thanks for the link. They always look a bit different on a web page compared to when they're trying to run you off the road! The SL 63 looks the most like what I saw.
