    PEDAL ON PARLIAMENT 2

Over the weekend, thousands of cyclists descended on Edinburgh to take part in the second Pedal on Parliament campaign event.

I was among the estimated 3,000- 4,000 cyclists at the event which called for action to transform Scotland into a cycle-friendly nation.

The Pedal on Parliament campaign has an eight point manifesto calling for better investment in cycling and a more strategic overview of how the needs of cyclists can be met.

As someone who cycles around Edinburgh regularly, I am aware of the many barriers that stop people taking to the saddle like road safety and a lack of facilities.
However, I also know how rewarding cycling can be, whether for leisure, commuting or sport.

In Edinburgh, steps are being taken to help improve the situation. The Council’s Active Travel Action Plan sets out a range of initiatives to make cycling safer and more practical.
The plan includes improvements to the cycle route network, prioritising maintenance of cycle lanes and promoting cycling in our schools and workplaces.

The Scottish Government has set a target for 10% of all journeys to be made by bike by 2020. It is an ambitious target and events like Pedal on Parliament should help to focus minds on achieving it.
