Benefit of taking primary position

I went to POP2 yesterday with my wife - we had a very pleasant 18 mile round trip. Straight in from Dalkeith on the way in but returning via Portobello prom, the Esk cycle path and Dalkeith country park.

We were travelling somewhat slower than I usually do though and, perhaps because of that, I cycled a little less assertively than I would normally.

At the junction of London Road with Restalrig Road (travelling East) (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=edinburgh+map&ll=55.955022,-3.149531&spn=0.000371,0.000603&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&hnear=Edinburgh,+City+of+Edinburgh,+United+Kingdom&gl=uk&t=h&z=21), I foolishly ignored my instincts to take primary at the lights and sat in the cycle lane. As a result we were cut up somewhat as the road narrows at the lights (immediately when the paint runs out). The driver seemed to be in no particular hurry (not an excuse of course), but seemed to assume that we would be happy rubbing tyres with the pavement and handerbars against her mirror.

Lesson - take primary at lights

Standards of driving at that junction are particularly terrible for some reason. I quite often pass through there driving or cycling as my wife's family live in various locations around Willowbrae, Piershill and Craigentinny. Definitely one for Primary Position and some assertive over the shoulder eyeballing.

Yup, that's one of the low points on my commute home. The painted on cycle is always blocked, and cars often want to floor it out of there.
