meh, they discounted hotdogs at pop for cyclists, they can do what they want in my book :)

I gather this is actually another stand - in addition to the one at the junction of MMW/NMW and the one in George Square.

I think it's this very one they are talking about, probably only being flagged as an issue with the increase in cyclists and people in the park due to the weather.

@chimpofdoom I asked one of the councillors about it on Friday, and he said it was a new one.

I think the rock dogs guys are buying a larger "proper" catering stand. This is what they're talking about. They want the planning permission before they get the stand I guess.

ah. will the new one still be a cycle-drawn trailer?

I remember seeing the rock dogs stand for sale on ebay last year after the summer.
a bit of a non-issue this, you'll have people wandering into and out of the cycle lane along here with or without a hotdog stand

It's a victory against the cycling lobby, so I read in the comments. Seems a victory against the pedestrian lobby too.
In fact I'm struggling to see what lobby does win here.
I have enough faith in humanity that there must be some logical reason why they didn't just use the pedestrian half. It is being tested somewhat since I can't see what it is.

@SRD They're planning on taking it to concerts and events/festivals soon so I think not.

Hotdog lobby.

Indeed a silly place to put the hot dog stand, you'd have thought common sense would have prevailed and it would have been sighted on the opposite side of the path, and further down (to avoid toilet smell nastiness).
In reality though, there probably won't be any major incidents so long as pedestrians look where they are going. A whole lot more than the 40 people per hour manage to cross the cycle path without incident just a few yards down the path at George Sq Lane. A lot of fuss over not very much...

People usually walk up/down the cycle path a couple of yards up from there, at the new cut-through entrance. Which is irritating, but you expect Edinburgh cycling to be irritating and sub-standard. This is just going to make it a bit more so. Ho hum.

A very strange place to set up shop, in a dead zone next to a cycle path which is almost always in the shade just next to where groups of street drinkers congregate. Also, isn't there another log cabin type stall on the pedestrian side about there selling similar stuff?
Can't see it lasting long myself - I don't see it causing too much trouble, but think it was wrong to grant it permission.

How hard would it have been to put it on the other side? Typical Edinburgh. Why do something adequately when you can do it badly?

Indeedy. I don't have safety fears but I do have this is blimmin' stupid fears.

How many hot dog stands can one middle meadow walk stand?
Posted 12 years ago # -
The recommendation was to reject the proposal but the Councillors rejected the rejection.

Strange position of agreeing with everyone.
In the grand scheme of things it's a path that has a lot of pedestrians crossing it anywhere, and there are likely many more cutting through to the uni than will visit the hot dog stand.
But.
It just shows a frankly barmy approach in that it could (probably, don't know what restrictions there are) have been located on the opposite side, where the pedestrians already are, rather than encouraging more to corss. The biggest issue may come in busy period where it's not just a case of pedestrians crossing, but queueing and completely blocking the cyclepath side. And it's all indicative of the Edinburgh approach to cycle provision - take one of the best used (and well-observed) pieces of infrastructure in the city, then encourage people to walk and queue on it.

When the Meadows was being laid out, and when it was still known as Hope Park, MMW would have been a road with a roundabout halfway, and the proto-Melville Drive would've cut right through the middle instead.
Take one of the best used (and well-observed) pieces of infrastructure in the city, then encourage people to walk and queue on it.
I suspect that CEC gets itchy feet whenever it sees a patch of tarmac or grass with 'nothing' happening on it.

WC: agreed. Two more thoughts:
It's going to make MMW even more difficult to cycle up/down during the festival than it was last year (when the cycle path always seemed to have dozens of tourists wandering around on it).
Also, on your general point about the Edinburgh approach: I remember in previous years large toilet caravans being set up on the grass right next to MMW for big events in the Meadows, so that all the needy users queueing for the loos would have to stand right on the cycle path. Thoughtless. I suppose it's the Meadows mudbath that's saved us from that so far this year.Posted 12 years ago # -
Aye, might be a good idea to avoid the Meadows come Festival time. Come to think of it that's usually a good idea anyway...

It was all looking pretty quiet on Wednesday. I passed several times and this was about as busy as it got. Nice to see them getting some custom

There? That is a stupid place. The rock dog guys are normally further down on the other side or at the compass, this looks like some other joker..
