The perils of a low sun....

yeah, you can see he is in the shadow and the van has the sun on him as he turns
of course its no excuse and you can see its early morning. so light traffic and no issue with giving a few seconds to make sure its clear.
that could have been a sore one for the cyclist. at least the video has done its 'job' and I would hope there will be no issue with covering the damages.
of course thats just money and as i found ot. permanent damage to the body is a bigger issue!

Similar thing happened to me years ago at this very same junction. White van tried to nip across in front of me but a pedestrian was crossing the side street so he had to stop right in my path. I swerved but hit his rear cluster with my shoulder before being jettisoned over my handlebars yet somehow managed to land on my feet (I wish I'd seen this happen as I've no idea how this happened).

Even if the van hadn't stopped it would have been a close call as he really didn't have the time to make the manoeuvre.

All in all it was a bit of everyone's fault in my opinion as:
    i) the driver shouldn't have made the turn
ii) I should have anticipated he would make the turn and eased off a bit
iii) the pedestrian (even though he had right of way) could have paid a bit better attention to his surroundings as he had headphones on and stepped into the road without looking.

"before being jettisoned over my handlebars yet somehow managed to land on my feet (I wish I'd seen this happen as I've no idea how this happened)." - I did that once years ago when I was a teenager, no idea how I did it either :)
