"It comes as costs for phase one of the project spiralled to £30m – £12m more than was allocated"

No. Really? In a council-managed project? I'm stunned.

It would be interesting to see the cost/benefit analysis for this work. £105m overall to protect 500 properties would mean a spend of £210,000 per property.

On the face of it that doesn't seem like good value, especially as the owners have freely chosen to build or buy property at risk of flooding.

Presumably thought has been given to just waiting another 180 years for the next 1:180 year event and then simply repairing the damage?

    That's assuming the plans work...

(Not even counting the recent flooding in Stockbridge which may or may not have been caused by inadequate precautions by contractors during the 'flood prevention' work!!!)

In her last career, SWMBO was an accomplished hydrologist who did a lot of flood risk work, so I suppose I should just ask her!

I did once get a call from her office to go and look at a particular culvert on the Braid Burn as it was raining very heavily. There's not much risk of flooding in Leith (not that kind at least) :)

This project was never about saving houses, it was all about saving rugby pitches. The original (and far, far cheaper) proposal was to use the rugby pitches as a flood plain, rather than destroying peoples homes but the rugby mafia clubs said no so a hugely expensive and destructive scheme was put into place instead. Notice that the rugby pitches are now protected by this scheme before it ran out of money.
