Regularly carrying 15kg of meat which is able to shift its own centre of gravity an inch or so either side on top of the rack is probably trickier than even heavily-packed (but lower-down and less wriggly) panniers. I have to keep my panniers fairly far back in order to not foul my heels so the odd miniature wheelie when setting off is not unknown.

I was wondering if you had a lion or something in the back garden to feed until I realised you were referring to the piglet.

You can't [easily, or cost efficiently in one day] shop AND cycle ..... in Glasgow, with a visit to Go Outdoors in Airdrie, or a coffee and wander in Stirling on the way home, when you live n Fife.

OK extreme examples I admit, but examples none the less of shopping trips we have taken in the last year or so.

It all depends where you go shopping. I'd have though Glasgow shopping was a matter of train to Queen Street, then walking around the pedestrianised centre. There's a Go Outdoors in Granton I believe, but if you're city centre shopping Milletts or some other outdoor shop will suffice.

Of course cars give you the option to tour around several towns/cities to go shopping, but I think this is not the point of the discussion. The contention was you cannot go shopping and cycle, when it's patently obvious you can. The style of shopping maybe different to that using a car, but still has some advantages over, say, shopping by bus or train, principally that you can carry more, and have more flexibility/mobility.
