2013 Stage One. Coverage of the opening stage of this year's race, which will see the riders travel 213km from Porto-Vecchio to Bastia on the island of Corsica. Last year's champion Bradley Wiggins has already been ruled out from defending his title due to injury and illness, but his compatriot and fellow Team Sky rider Chris Froome, who finished second 12 months ago and has been in fine form recently, is expected to mount a challenge. Presented by Gary Imlach, with commentary by Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen, analysis by Chris Boardman and reports by Ned Boulting

Gerraint Thomas is predicting carnage today. I hope everyone gets through it unscathed. Fingers crossed for a Cav win !

"commentary by Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen"

All the more reason to watch it on Eurosport.

Yeah, but analysis by Chris Boardman. He's been very good at providing some intriguing insights in the coverage I've been watching. I thought his comments on Wiggo's "injury" were very interesting. As he put it, when you're a sportsman you can't admit you can't face going into work. Seems to think it's mainly psychological with Wiggins' absence from le Tour.

Watched it on Eurosport (with foreign language commentary as I was outside the UK) last year, so I'll be doing ITV4 this time around...

On the down side, it will be a week before I understand anything Sean Kelly says.

Boardman and Boulting are good, maybe the other 2 will retire soon.

My children and I had a very good laugh as the camera alighted on Cadel Evans, who was changing bikes. Then Cadel began reaching into his shorts, adopting the stance of someone about to have a pee by the side of the road. Suddenly no commentary, camera lingers rather too long before cutting away as they realise what is happening. Much hilarity here!

Rob Hayles - Former GB cyclist and 5 live sports extra commentator
"I managed to speak with David Millar after the race and he was chuffed to get a top-four finish. I had a text conversation with Cavendish late last night and he'd calmed down a bit and was happy to not go down in that crash. He said if he'd not just moved to hydraulic brakes he may have gone over his handle bars."

Great stage today, very entertaining for all the right reasons. And the Corsican scenery looks gorgeous.

French rider Jeremy Roy of the Francaise des Jeux team has told France's Velo magazine that today is "the stage of all dangers".
Why? Well, try winding roads along Corsica's wild western coast, then a speedy 10km downhill from the Marsolino Pass, the last of four mid-grade climbs, down to the finish line. Sounds like fun to me, but then I am not riding it at breakneck speed...

Matt Slater, BBC sports news reporter, in Corsica

"So, Geraint Thomas has broken his pelvis (and is being a bally hero about it), Mark Cavendish has been under the weather, and David Millar just missed out on wearing yellow today by about a metre. But are we complaining? Not a bit of it. Thomas is a trooper, Cavendish will get his chance on Wednesday and Thursday, and Millar is a philosophical soul - he might even claim the lead in Tuesday's team time trial. And then there is Chris Froome, who clearly enjoyed panicking his rivals yesterday by accelerating up the final climb.
"It's another tough one today. Hot and twisty, like a withered chilli. Nasty climb near the finish, too. Is this a day for a break to stay away?"

  17. GERAINT THOMAS IS RIDING WITH A BROKEN PELVIS!!!!!

These guys really are nails. As someone I work with has pointed out - must be something to do with two wheels after Lorenzo came fifth in the MotoGP yesterday after breaking his collarbone on Thursday - same guy got the podium last year riding with two broken ankles...

And footballers will whimper off with a stubbed toe.

fractured pelvis... let's not get carried away. Still must be incredibly painful.

    Posted 11 years ago #
  20. You're right ARobComp, a fracture makes it seem so much better than a 'break'... ;)

(actually, 'fracture' sounds a lot cooler).

(and still, kudos to Thomas, though I can't help feeling continuing with such an injury is also a bit foolish).

Fractured hip. Shame but let's see how far he gets. As froome joked (yes froome made a joke) he's Welsh he'll make it. I'm hoping to make Ventoux for Bastille day then try and catch the double ascent of alp d'huez on the 18th. Very excited.

Phwoar I enjoyed watching the catch up from yesterday while working through e-mails this morning - great finish to the race!

I am starting to get increasingly frustrated at the rubbish commentary from the older sounding guy on ITV (not the one that does the competition). Some great stuff from Boardman as always.

If you think ITV4 is bad, try Eurosport. I watched the highlights there last night, and while they had some good commentary in the closing section, and some good analysis of climbs etc., they didn't half spout some twaddle too! Personally I think ITV4 have just about got the tone right this year.

Having said that, an interesting repeat of Eurosport coverage of May's Lincoln GP just after TdF highlights. Not quite the same glamour, but still engagng. Female presenter too. British Cycling seemed to be heavily involved in sponsoring the TV coverage...

  25. ^^^^ insanely jealous...

ARobComp, I don't mind Phil Liggett, who is the main commentator, but Paul Sherwen irritates the hell out of me (his co-commentator, especially when he mentions 'the professional sport of cycling' instead of just saying 'cycling').

Gary Imlach, who does the colour bits, is great, and I've fond memories of watching him on the old C4 American Football coverage back in the day (his dad (or grandad?) was a Scotland football international way way back, Imlach rather strangely being a traditional Scottish name that means a strip of useless land for growing things between the sandy shore and the better fields further back.

Ned Boulting is good value as well, and Boardman just really really knows what he's talking about.

I *love* Paul Sherwen and Phil Liggett, but they do seem to be reliably wrong about everything in their commentary. We mostly enjoy them for the opportunity to play TdF bingo: suitcase of courage, mano a mano, and the compulsory 'Big Jens Voigt'. Plus extra credit for any point where Paul Sherwen is clearly just reading out the notes from the local tourist board about Chateau X while a crash or something equally dramatic happens unobserved...

  27. Team Time Trial in full swing. Hoping for good things from Garmin today, and to see David Millar in Yellow. Yeah, he's a controversial love him or hate him figure, but I quite like the guy and think he's quite genuine and honest (now - and yes, it's debateable if he'd be that way if he hadn't been caught doping).

Can I just say that while I think it would be good for British cycling to have another winner in Froome, I just can't warm to the guy. I know we shouldn't base these things on media portrayal, but he just comes across as cold (kind of like Indurain, who I could appreciate as a cycling machine, but always wanted someone else to win). And I shouldn't blame him for his girlfriend, but her twitter whingeing about him having to support Wiggins last year grated - anyone involved in the sport should really understand theconcept of team leaders and how teams in cycling work, in much the same way that Froome now as the leader would expect unwavering support from his domestiques.

@WC I liked his wee decision to kill it on the climb on Sunday TBH. He was basically going "taps aff" for the lols as the kids are saying these days.

@wc right or wrong, i find myself much in agreement with your assessment of millar and froome for much the same reasons.

Now showing my ignorance, could someone explain why they use different bikes for the time trials than for the 'ordinary' races? in terms my 6 year old can understand? (i tried a explanation of my own, but promised to ask for expert input).

On another theme entirely, she really likes the wiggle advert with the girls in it, but is EXTREMELY annoyed to find out that there's no women's tdf race.
