In my capacity as Removals / House clearance guy http://www.yell.com/b/Murray+Moves-House+Clearance-Edinburgh-EH111LG-7563128/?view=map plug plug. I have come across a couple of old roof racks that were built to take a tandem. They bolt on to a standard car roof rack and can be adjusted to the length of the bike. The y need a good wire brushing and maybe a wee lick of paint and some fresh bolts wouldn't hurt them. Give me a shout before they get weighed in at Daltons.

Be a shame to see something potentially useful (and having looked, bloody expensive) scrapped.

I don't need one but I have enough storage space to store them in case a need emerges say from one of Laidback's customers or just generally for occasional borrowings.

I believe there's also a tandem club website with its own forum - it might be worth asking there as well?

The potential for extended family rides beyond the expected range of the littlest cycling solo. The greater comfort and more upright position of the littlest compared with a tagalong. The greater control given to the pilot compared with the side-to-side flopping of a tagalong. With a Helios, the flexibility of the stoker's seating allowing adult-child and adult-adult use.

Used relentlessly over an extended period, in both their positive and negative forms, these and any rationales you invent yourself can eventually persuade a reluctant spouse to yield to the obvious logic.
