Interesting discussion at the Transport Forum today - initiated by Paul Tetlaw of Transform Scotland - about plans to revamp the inside of Waverly Station.

    2 key issues:

    1. the council has money and plans to improve some aspects of access to the station - eg, i think, widening pavements at waverley bridge.

    2. but Paul's original presentation was more about plans by Network rail to revamp how they use the space inside the station - in particular moving offices out and using existing buildings etc for nice restaurants and promoting Scotland. Paul used a Pecha Kucha presentation (they're everwhere these days) to contrast Waverley with the new King's Cross developments. Quite convincing and very effective.

A real benefit for Waverley would be to break through into the arches under the former railway land/and possibly under railway at the East end by New Street/Calton St Bridge, to provide a direct route for walking & cycling, and access to a possible bus route, between here and Holyrood, and onwards up to London Road.

Recognition of Fleshmarket and Bank Steps as direct and fast routes to Waverley from the Old Town would also be good, given that the Old Town is set out for pedestrian movement. with my bete noir that Cockburn Street needs to be restored to the original flush topped tight bond setts and those dreadful 'cod' cobbles which are nothing like the original design, removed as my 3 minute ride from Nicholson Square to Waverley of the 1970's is no longer comfortably possible.
