Having lived through all this I commend Road, rail and runways for your edification and amusement.

With some relevance to recent topics.

I notice Ernest Marples was quite prominent in the motorways section. The Tory transport minister who pushed through Beeching's cuts to the railways, while building motorways. Who built the motorways? Marple's construction firm, whose shares were transferred to his wife...

On the other hand, Ernie Marples' brother was a cyclist and, as a very elderly gent, could be seen still attending the CTC Birthday Rides dressed in what would be called period clothing from his youth.

The story had it that when he went on club hostel weekends, back when one had to do chores before leaving, he stayed at the hostel while his butler lodged at a local inn and came to the hostel to do the chores for Mr Marples in the morning.

Although there were quite a lot of shots with bicycles in them, they were never explicitly mentioned in the film.

Were motorways the solution to congestion? It seems not. They (and the minister who built them, literally) helped to kill off large parts of the railways though. Was that good for cyclists? I suspect not.
