scared the pants off me this AM
I was heading up to the tunnel at 0345
saw 'something' ahead that wasnt quite right
when I got close I saw the outline of many people, heard a generator running and no other real noise
didnt know what was going on. So I did a left and trudged up the hill to the left of the tunnel

  4. Heading to the Copenhagenize talk there were loads of people at the bottom of the tunnel, BBQ going and everything. They parted as I approached and cheered me by. Like riding up a mountain stage in the Tour.

The smoke from the BBQ was gradually making its way up the tunnel, and there was a most displeased looking St Leonard's resident scowling down the tunnel form the top.

Wonder if they have the appropriate permissions / security etc to hold an event where alcohol is being consumed. If I was that disgruntled looking St Leonard's resident, I would be checking that with the council.

  6. Do you need that if it's just a group of friends getting together to have a BBQ? As far as I'm aware, unless there's a specific bylaw about the consumption of alcohol in a particular public place then you're free to consume away, and if you're not selling it there's not an off-licence required either.

  7. From Wiki:

The City of Edinburgh allows the consumption of alcohol in public places but under the Edinburgh by-law, anyone drinking in public would have to stop if asked by police

    From their facebook page:

3 DJ's, bar, money changing hands, sounds pretty much like an event which would need permission to me...

  9. Ah, interesting. The one I rode past was most certainly just a group of friends having a BBQ, not an organised thing like this.

Thing is, unless it's causing a disturbance (it might be?) is there any problem with this? If they were blaring out music, of course, but given everyone has headphones - I guess there will be some amount of shouting?

  10. But yes, they'd need a licence to sell the homebrew.

I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, would probably have been the sort of thing I would have frequented as a 'yoof', but...

I'm old now, and the thought of a lot of young folks drinking, and taking drugs at the end of my garden without the proper security/medical provisions in place scares me. What about when this takes off, and all of a sudden there are 200 people at these events?

Yes, have them, go, have fun and be merry, but do it properly, and safely...

    ...and somewhere else? :D

  13. "... at the end of my garden..."

In fairness the bottom end of the tunnel is a third of a mile from the top, though if the party is in the middle that's 270m away - still quite a big garden!

    "... and taking drugs..."

It's certainly possible, but without having actually seen it it's also a bit of a smear against those taking part...

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

Ah, to be young and carefree.

There's a drug often taken by todays youth that has the following effects, I can vouch for this as I've seen it first hand:

    Euphoria, talkativeness, relaxation

Which sounds lovely, and accounts for its popularity, but it's followed by:

nausea, possible vomiting, impaired motor and sensory function, impaired cognition

And in large enough doses results in:

    possible unconsciousness, death

Thank god it's not legal eh? ;)

As someone who lives at the top of the tunnel. The real issue isn't the event itself it's the bloody inconsiderate shouting imbeciles walking home from the event laughing their heads off and shouting at 3am that are the issue (speaking as someone who had to get up in 3 hours and ride to Aberdeen....

TBH I couldn't give a toss what people want to do down there. I know there'll be some bad eggs but in general people seem fine. Hopefully they don't leave a mess. The drumming that was happening down there a few weeks back was seemingly quite frustrating as it was VERY loud and at tea timeish meant you couldn't have your windows open and not hear it being amplified up the tunnel.

Anyway I'm sure I'll be receiving panicked e-mails about this event at some point on the neighbourhood announcement list.... Recently someone was complaining that their neighbour had a party on a saturday night and ALLOWED PEOPLE TO PARK IN THE EMPTY PARKING SPACES WITHOUT PERMITS. OMFG.

You probably find this effect after many adrenaline-fuelled events. I was at a trackday at Knockhill a while back, and left about the same time as everyone else. While I had been trackside with my camera, everyone else had been racing. Unfortunately when they returned to the Queen's highway they forgot about that tiny detail, which meant I was subject to several ludicrously fast overtakes even before I'd reached the M90. I was doing 55-60mph and they weren't.

Several of the younger generation, in their slammed Civics and Golfs and elbows sticking out of the windows, were still full of beans as we made our way back over the bridge. I could have grabbed a handful of throttle but decided that feathering my brake pedal was more effective.
