Warning - canal pusher-inner

Colleague this morning related a story that last night he was pushed into the canal by another cyclist on the viaduct at Slateford.

The miscreant was described as a cross-dressed male who appeared to be mumbling to himself in some sort of Eastern European tongue. My colleague said that as they aproached eachother, he moved in to railings to let the other pass, but other insisted he passed him. As he went to pass, the guy said something indeterminable. When he asked "excuse me?" to the guy, the next thing he knew he landed in the canal, bike and all.

As his phone was ruined, he turned around and managed to tail the guy to Wester Hailes, where he went in to the Police station to try and get some assistance. It appears that the counter staff were less than interested and he wasted half an hour there before giving up.

So, if you find yourself passing someone of a similar description (sounds fairly distinctive) on the canal, just be wary.

Sounds like the same individual Greenroofer posted about some months back.

Hope your colleague is unhurt, phone excepted.

Apart from scraped knees from retrieving his bike, he's fine.

I've been in touch with Kaputnik's colleague, and can confirm that this is the same person I posted about some time ago.

I've passed to the victim a picture that I took last year of my assailant for him to give to the police.

I took advantage of useless call back from police about quadbike to harass them about failure to deal with this case (tenuous connection: would you actually send someone? w hailes police refused to deal with...)

To their credit the office on the phone sounded appalled and said that you should go back, and insist they deal, and complain about failure to respond to initial report.

Colleague pulled a woman cyclist (bike first at her request) out of the aquaduct only a few days ago too.
<EDIT> wasn't the guy he has seen on the aquaduct and now warns people about - sounds like this one was a genuine accident</EDIT>

I have come across this person several times now! On one occasion he was pushing a bike with a basket/box of some description attached to the handlebars and wearing a strange ensemble and a full face of make up.

As myself and small offspring approached on aqueduct, he insisted we pass around him but I absolutely refused to allow small child to do this. I'm glad now that I did. He was however, verbally abusive towards us as he pushed passed. Completely unnecessary behaviour but at least we didn't end up in the canal.

    Didn't think to report...

I think I that might have seen this person recently too. In fact, it was also on the aqueduct - a cyclist ahead of me and then myself were invited to pass around them. The preceeding cyclist managed to complete a pass fine so I decided to go for it as well and it all worked out ok. The person said something unintelligible to me as I was passing, to which I replied with a friendly nod and a general "yeah" of agreement to whatever it might have been, which didn't seem like it was meant agressively...

A man attempted to push me and my bike into the canal at the Slateford aqueduct this morning at about 8-10am.

WARNING: This man was out to deliberately cause trouble to a cyclist. It is likely he will try this again. Description: stocky build/rounded man in his 50/60s with spiky grey hair. Scottish or UK nationality. Light coloured tweed flat cap. Cream woolly jumper, blue jeans, black workies boots and carrying a black telescopic walking stick. If you see him PLEASE AVOID.

Also if you witnessed this incident (Mon 30th Mar, 8-10am) please PM me.

I started to cycle across heading West. After about 20 yards I came across a pedestrian so I stopped in plenty of time but remained mounted to judge what passing technique to use. He stopped and stood resolutely in the middle of the towpath. He then started ranting about by-laws and asked me to dismount, which I did. He insisted that I should've dismounted 'without being asked'. I told him that I'd stopped to let him past 'without being asked.'

I stood by the railing with my bike canal side and invited him to pass. He did not and stood blocking my way, continuing to rant. Stating over and over that dismounting is 'for the safety of pedestrians...'. I tried not to react and avoid saying anything further. Unfortunately I did not continue to handle it well and an argument ensued. At that point he pulled out a voice recorder and started recording - this made me think he was clearly 'out to cause trouble'. I put it to him that he clearly had an issue with cyclists.

Meanwhile other cyclists and pedestrians were passing the two of us, but he still would not pass me.

Eventually he passed but as he did, he grabbed my bike and tried to throw it in the canal, along with me. Fortunately I had a strong grip on both the bike & railing and he did not succeed and gave up after awhile, walking away. By then I was shouting 'call the police, call the police, I am being assaulted.'

Despite there being around 4 or 5 people nearby, nobody called the police and nobody stopped to help, save for one young woman who kindly asked if I was OK. I was too flustered by then to think of collecting names & addresses as witnesses and everyone seemed to be scarpering off to work anyway.

So I called the police myself. I told them to send a car to the end of the canal to head the guy off, but the reaction of the telephone police dude was far from reassuring that they would do anything to catch him. They were more interested in getting a statement from me than actually catching anybody. So I waited for them to come and take a statement. They took an hour to arrive while I waited in the wind, freezing cold and slightly shaken.

I am sure this guy has a massive issue with cyclists and will take it upon himself to enforce the 'law' on the aqueduct. Please look out for him.

Hope you're feeling ok - don't let a total wingnut spoil your day.

Another +1 for using a camera. I wonder if he sussed out on approach if your bike was so equipped?

He was fortunate that he assaulted someone level-headed who didn't over-react. Next time he may not be so lucky.

@edd1e_h bad luck, but thank you for the warning. I saw nothing to cause concern as I crossed just before 9am :(

    That sounds bad

Different from the previous foreign cross dresser but similarly florid state of mental health?

    @edd1e_h

Think I may have encountered this dude last autumn. Stopped to let him past but he insisted I dismount. So I did, leaving him six inches of tiptowpath to squeeze by on as I stood beside my bike. Slightly aggressive on my part, but I just lost patience with his ranting. Lots of 'this is what you wanted isn't it?' from me and sweaty cursing from him. I also kept a tight hold on the railings. Glad you're OK.

  17. Funnily enough I crossed the aquaduct yesterday (though a lot later than this, as I remarked to myself how pleasant the canal is when it's quiet), and stopped for two people coming the other way. I was in the saddle, and stopped hugging the railings. Loss more space for people to pass (and both thanked me).

This chap sounds a bit loopy.

I had a run-in on the aqueduct this evening with the character described in earlier posts of mine and others.

Stockily built, apparently female, with blonde hair pushing a red bike with three bags on the handlebars and an extremely wonky saddle.

This time there was no physical contact, and it was less threatening than it has been in the past, but there was a raised voice and incomprehensible utterings. There was no way that I was going to pass this person on the aqueduct given my and their previous history. A stand-off developed, resolved in the end by me turning round and returning to the end so that this person could pass there.

I have video footage of the incident, I was going to publish it but I don't think there's any benefit and I'm a bit uncomfortable about whether any of us would be watching it for the right reasons. However if you have any bad encounters with this person in future for which you need an identifying picture or evidence of other encounters, do let me know.

    Hi Greenroofer,

As I was coming along the towpath this evening I saw you both ahead, and when the chap in front of me decided to pass you, (and then transgender person)I followed on.

I contemplated offering help/getting involved but having been on the receiving end of blonde-persons fury previously I'm afraid I chickened out and just wanted past him quickly. He is an awkward customer and barely gave enough room for passing anyway.

Sorry. You probably did the right thing as he was really fired up.

@lorlane Were you on the white bike with black basket on the front? You didn't get much room to pass did you? And certainly no recognition that you might need a bit of space.

No worries at all about not getting involved. There was no physicality (this time) and I wasn't feeling particularly threatened, just a bit cautious. I'm pretty sure that this person recognises me: we have history going back several years.

Although, while not feeling particularly threatened the adrenalin was clearly up, which made my knees a bit wobbly and that made turning the bike round on the aqueduct 'interesting': the last thing I wanted was a self-inflicted entry into the canal when so keen to avoid one from someone else.

@greenroofer my bike is silver - might have looked white on film - with a black basket. Today I was not wearing a helmet.

He is quite unnerving. I feel a bit queasy even thinking about it now so I totally get your wobbly knees at the time!

Wasn't sure where to put this, but as I was crossing the Slateford Aqueduct earlier I moved to the side about 2/3 of the way across to let a female pedestrian pass in the other direction. Upon closer inspection, however, it was apparent that the pedestrian was a cross-dresser - I was told that "the sign says to get off and walk across", or words to that effect, in a clear, Scottish male voice as they passed me and another cyclist. I cautiously replied "right" and was relived when nothing further happened...

Another run-in this evening with Katherina Mika on the aqueduct. Lots of gesticulating and shouting in a mixture of English and a foreign language.

I am convinced she recognises me with our long history of interactions, and it's clear that she stopped on the aqueduct to make an issue of things with me after having let other people past.

There was no physical contact but it was still an unpleasant experience, and I must confess that I swore inwardly and felt my heart sink as I came round the corner onto the aqueduct and saw her coming towards me.

Oh dear... I haven't seen her on the canal lately but did make a few spots around the King's Theatre junction in recent months.

I see this person every other day on the towpath. Always shouting at me in a language I don't understand. Always dressed in ladies clothing, make up and an old bike with bags hanging off the handlebars. I'm an early starter so normally would bump into said person around 6.45. Will be extra careful now I've read this thread. Awful! I have a stack of reasons building up that says to me 'find another route home and avoid the canal'.

Come off the canal at longstone, cycle through the park, down to sainsburys and then up to the a70 through the traffic lights take the road near the dominos pizza on the right behind slateford station back onto canal. Detour but avoids aqueduct flashpoint

@gembo thanks for the tip. I'm starting to get a bit fed up with suicidal cyclists going under the bridges at full speed without any bell ringing, and pedestrians with errant dogs and headphones on full blast who don't hear you when you try to warn.

Oh I saw her this morning! Older bike, flat bars, two bags hanging off handlebars? One was an IKEA bag, right? Strawberry blond? She was wearing a dark T/shirt and had jeans on? Is this her?

Has she pushed anyone in the canal? I thought the Phantom Canal Pusherinner was a bloke?
