Gembo, she's just 'she', even if she has an uncommon personal history.

Unless you were making light of DaveC's misunderstanding, in which case at ease.

A flurry of sightings this week: cycling on the campus at Heriot-Watt, cycling on the towpath and, this morning, on the aqueduct... I and a cyclist ahead of me were heading west and moved to the side to give way to a lady pushing a bike who passed us both. We then continued to wait for Katherina to pass since she was also pushing her bicycle behind the other lady, but instead she came to a halt and insisted that we pass her so we both jumped off our bikes and cautiously pushed them past. Everything worked out ok!

That must have been....tense. I guess the worst that could happen is a soaking in dilute duck poop and an hour with the police and then a bit of fame in the Chipwrapper, but even so...actually as I type that it sounds quite horrible.

Been to see the new Bike Hub dude yet?

"...actually as I type that it sounds quite horrible"

My sister used to do lots of swimming in ponds when she did triathlon/aquathlon and claimed several instances of emesis to be duck-product-ingestion-related. It'd also possibly take out any electronic devices on your person and require a lot of tedious stripping/regreasing.

@IWRATS I was mildly concerned, but the guy ahead was my 'canary'; after he made it past ok I felt more confident, but was ready to attempt to react if I felt it necessary. I politely said "thank you" as I passed for good measure.

I met Kerr last month. He seems friendly and enthusiastic.

While approaching the Slateford Aqueduct from the east this morning, I spotted a lone bicycle resting against the railings at the west end, which made me wonder if somebody might have fallen into the canal. As I joined the aqueduct, I could see a cyclist who was now pushing what I assumed to be the same bicycle. He then jumped on and started riding across towards me. I let him pass me, realising as he did so that the canal pusher-inner was heading across the aqueduct behind him; presumably there had been some kind of altercation as he was wanting to cycle past her at the west end of the aqueduct which had delayed him (he wasn't wet though). I then dismounted my bike and pushed it cautiously around the outside of the pusher-inner while attempting a cheerful 'morning', but received a torrent of unintelligible ranting in return.

@IWRATS I see our own canal pusher-inner most mornings around 6.30 on the towpath. Seems to be off duty though (fortunately).

The Manchester one sounds even worse!

@bill @IWRATS whilst I was striking in February and March I spotted the pusher-inner on the towpath, usually heading out of town in the early afternoon. I even managed to pass by on the Slateford Aqueduct unscathed but I did dismount.

There is also I think a polish woman who sings psalms as she crosses the aqueduct. She paused mid psalm to thank me for leaning into the railing to allow her to pass thn continued with psalm. Maybe not psalm, maybe folk song? Nice voice, quite high but tuneful, dresses kinda Amish, sounds a little worried re the crossing of the aqueduct. Might be Russian of course not polish, I am not equipped to distinguish twixt polish or Russian psalms, heck maybe the Catholic and Orthodox Churches do not have psalms?

Actually quite a fortunate incident. Had it not happened then Bill might have ended up dead the first time his heart gave problems rather than discovering the need for a pacemaker.

And like jdanielp I appreciated the rescuer having the cyclist's priorities in mind.

Katherina in full flow this evening. Why do I always meet her on the aqueduct?
    "You must dismount"
    "I am dismounted"
    ...and so on

Luckily the steadily building queue behind her and behind me started getting impatient so I was able to use this as a reason to ask her forcefully to get out of the way.

I had an HRM on at the time, and it's striking that there's a distinct spike in my heart rate at the moment I met her.

MrSRD and the family peloton also reported an encounter last night.

Perhaps anyone made uncomfortable by this person should call 101? The police can only take preventative action about things they know about. Quiet word might prevent unpleasantness?

I agree. Perhaps a reminder from an authority is needed that everyone should be courteous on the aqueduct.

Riding back on Friday there was a chap clad all in black, with a goatee and long black hair in a pony tail, big black rucksack, standing at the side of the canal just before the canal passes over the rail tracks to the right, between Harrison Park and the exit to Meggetland. A cyclist in front seemed to be having an altercation ... at... him so I slowed a little.

He stood calmly watching me approach and just as I got to level with him did some sort of lunge - tai chi- pose thing. He didn't come close or touch me but it was disconcerting, and had I not seen the previous incident I'd have gotten quite the shock, which is what I suspect was going on when I saw the previous rider giving him some chat.

When I looked back he had returned to his statuesque pose waiting, no doubt, for the next rider. Very strange and quite concerning.

Meant to call 101 but didn't for some reason which is bad of me. Not sure if anyone else saw or heard anything.

Crikey. Is anybody aware of any fatalities on/in the Union Canal in, say, the last 20 years? I suppose it's less inner-city and easier to climb out of (although I wouldn't like to have to try it) than some canals...

'Ten per cent of the men's bodies recovered from the water were found with their zips open.' I have no zip :/

Sadly the aqueduct is the site of several suicides, two I am aware of. From the top down into the builders yard - a bad way to go for sure.

No drownings I am aware of?

The basin has bars now and people may use the towpath to get home? So falling in drunk and banging your head is possible (our very own Uberuce famously lost his spectacles in such an incident)

The zipper stat is from Amsterdam.

The serial killer on Manchester canals is an urban myth. The story starts with someone being pushed in by a nasty Minky Mank. But whilst that story sounds terrible it is unrelated to the table of stats as they are largely linked to accidents and suicides. Granted ten remain open so that is what whips up the media interest and the psychologist used to give credence is now keeping a low profile, whilst his colleague the criminologist has given a more measured response.

I guess that article indicates our problem with alcohol rather than canal-based serial killers. Unzip to micturate, slip, fall into the cold water all drunk and the game is easily over I imagine.

If Manchester canals are like Birmingham then they are a long way below path height and have walls rather than vegetation. Much harder to climb out of without a ladder.

I came across this thread this evening to see if anyone had reported an incident on the aqueduct. I was heading into town at about 9pm and turned back from the approach by a couple of plods who said it would be closed for an hour or two. On my way back to the previous turn off I met 6 or 8 more first responders including several firemen with a ladder. Hope nothing bad happened.

Meanwhile I've passed the Polish/Russian lady a good few times. She always shouts something at me. I thought it was just me as she seemed to know me and didn't bother other folks at the time. Haven't met her on the aqueduct itself for a long time, mostly at the bench on the town end or approaching on the other end.

@kdstephen, saw ambulance and police car at the ramp up onto canal / WoL path about 7.30pm. I'm afraid from what you ar saying it sounds like something bad has indeed occurred.

@kdstephen @gembo Back in late summer/autumn I used to see the transgender Polish person rather regularly around 6.30am on the towpath. The person ALWAYS was muttering something. I was never able to make any sense out of it. I can't remember hearing any swear words but it always sounded angry though.
