From the ERC website forum (via Jonny May):

I've just received a message from Musselburgh Running Club warning of their race on Saturday 20th July. It might be a good idea to avoid the bridge until noon that day:

"Good morning. I'm from the Musselburgh Running Club. It's our annual 10k on Saturday 20th July and we have a record entry of 400 runners who'll be coming from near and far. As you doubtless know there are significant issues with the use of the Electric Bridge at the end of New Street. It's looking likely we will have to use the footbridge both ways for our race. We would ask you to let you members know about the inevitable congestion this may cause and indeed it may be advisable to avoid that area until noon on the 20th. Thank you for your understanding."

Note: It's also the Open at Muirfield that weekend and it may also be an idea to avoid Gullane and surrounds - http://www.eastlothian.gov.uk/info/760/events_and_festivals/1521/the_open-travel_information/6

I came that way the other night, it seems Scottish Power, not content with locking the gates at either end of the bridge, have deposited a phalanx of interlocked plastic bollards on the bridge to prevent anyone from using it.

    Talk about selfish, petulant kids.

My recent Sunday morning runs out to Gullane have witnessed the build-up to the open golf circus; diversion closure signs are now in place, as are those coded directions for people with different coloured tickets. Was wondering if I could still get through all the traffic controls on my bike but reckon it'll be more trouble than it's worth so may have to re-route my Sunday run to avoid the crowds.

Not entirely off topic: last Sunday heading back into Edinburgh about 09:45 I was about to enter the (open) Musselburgh bridge when a gaggle of 9 or 10 riders appeared on it, heading towards me; I stopped and rolled backwards a bit to let them all through the staggered barrier at my end of the bridge. Anyone on here part of that peleton? If so, which CC were you?

@knees could be Portovelo? ERC generally head that way only in the other direction as their runs start from Commonwealth Pool or Fairmilehead.

I also noted that East Lothian Council (or someone) has rebranded the A198 as "Scotland's Golf Road" and put up large poles with banners every 500m or so proclaiming this wonder of engineering.

Seems to have done a marvellous job of encouraging the boy racers, motoGP-wannabe bikers and middle life crises in convertibles at making life unpleasant for other road users.

Ach, they were doing that anyway, prior to the branding waste of cash exercise.

kaputnik: "making life unpleasant for other road users"

A few days ago a car took the corner into Dean Road too fast and ran across onto my side of the road as I was coming down the hill. Only SDL* prevented a collision. I'd just keep away from the drunken golfers for the next few days.

I've long thought there should be a segregated cycle path alongside the A198. I know there are quiet roads further back, but if you want to cycle next to the coast (very scenic & desirable), the A198 is unavoidable.

Also there are a lot of novice cyclists on that road pootling between campsites & beaches. With all the boy racers and other traffic charging round the blind bends, the A198 is quite unpleasant.
