Anyone ever been to one of these before? There's one on 27th July - initially the website said it was only bikes but now it looks like a little bit of everything.

    here's a link auction

Is it worth a trip down to Dalry (unfortunately it's the west coast one rather than the west end one)?

"Jewellery, Watches, Cameras, Gift Vouchers, Computer Equipment, Gardening Equipment, Hand and Power Tools, Lawnmowers, Ladders,TV's, Video Recorders, DVD Players, Radios, Toys, New and Second HandClothing, Toiletries, Hundreds of Mountain Bikes, Children's Bikes & Scooters"

Why do I wonder if that's the same text every time??

    "Hundreds"?

No idea, haven't been to a 'police auction' since they moved them out of Edinburgh.

"Is it worth a trip down to Dalry"

Suppose it depends why you are going!

Would you go the day before and check them all?

I expect there will be a few dealers who 'know what things are worth'.

Might be worth 'phoning to find if most bikes are sold singly or in "job lots" - assuming you're only after one...

I know that Upcycles source some of the bikes they refurb at police auctions. The ones they get seem good quality, but I'd imagine that most of the bikes are supermarket specials.

Didn't realise they were in Edinburgh (assumed Glasgow).

    Know anything about them?

Yes, I nearly bought a bike off them! Based at the Holyrood Industrial Estate next to the architectural salvage place.

Small but varied selection of bikes an the chap seems to know his stuff. Think he does custom builds as well.

The one I looked at was in very good condition, but wasn't quite the right size for me. Probably slightly more expensive than private second hand sales but I keep my eye on the website to see if anything good comes up. I'd happily buy from him.

I've been to one of these, was quite an interesting experience - wide range of bikes but you really need to know your stuff. Mother's partner bought two mountain bikes for a very reasonable sum.

When I went the auction house was also selling off various other things - some good deals to be had in the tools/plant auction.

It's Dalry, Ayrshire, not Dalry, Edinburgh, alas.

But clearance auctions are always fun. You gotta get the stuff home though.

Checked with the auctioneer and they said the bikes are being sold individually and not in job lots

went to the auction over the weekend and got on ok - got a decent bike for about £70 which needs a little work, so including trains, and bits and bobs it'll work out about £100 all in. Probably not massively cheaper than gumtree/ebay.

it was mainly mens mountain bikes and kids bikes. A lot cheapy steel framed ones and at the other end of the scale some downhill bikes, a few treks, specialised, cannondales, scotts, etc.

the kids bikes sold from about £2 up to about £30 for the dearest. adult bikes ranged from £10 to £170. The condition varied alot, a few were bikes that were abandoned after getting their wheels kicked (which sold really cheap) to some really decent ones that didn't need any work other than tyres being pumped up. The bikes were mainly covered in dust and had flat wheels due to being in storage a long time.

There was a few guys in the crowd that seemed to have a good idea of what they were looking at and a lot who just wanted a big bike with loads of gears and suspension.

Overall, it was ok - I was stuck for a bike and had a free day with nothing else planned. If I had a car (or even worse, a car and trailer), I'd imagine I would have come back with all sorts - there was a plant/building gear sale on!
