Well done kappers and a'body else. Couldn't make it this morning* though did help out with an old child's bike the other day. Sterling effort at raising awareness, which appears to have worked well. A much needed act of remembrance too.

    * - was supposed to be going cycle camping with the family today but the weather forecast put us off for the time being...

Just to echo others - well done on the ghost bike. It's getting some really positive coverage and feeding in through media monitoring sites too so hopefully will get further pick-up.

Bl**dy Hell, we are going to need another Ghost Bike!

We have a frame for it already. Didn't think we'd be needing to use it so soon...

I'll go out with the black marker later this evening and add an extra tally to the board :(

Perhaps a small gathering to update the monument and leave some flowers?

    Posted 10 years ago #
  7. That's ridiculously coincidental and sad timing.

So the cost of upgrading the A9, in one infrasrtucture move, 30 years of the requested £20 a head a year cycle input could be funded?

    Some photos from this morning

Has to be said, kaputnik did a fabulous job of imagining and creating this event and the 'hardware'.

It came out of the realisation that 'we' would be unlikely to create a flash mob of hundreds (like London is doing).

In any case a well presented Ghost Bike - not common in Scotland - plus the "tombstone" (though perhaps not as "giant" as the ENews imagined it would be!) was enough to grab media attention.

In the end more than enough people turned up (mix of CCEers and some via PoP Facebook postings) to make it a real event, with enough solemnity, and photogenic too.

Well done. I planned to be there but had a teenage daughter to collect.

Can I add that cyclists have shown more democratic resolve and determination with this and with POP than motorists have ever shown (discounting the constant political lobbying done on behalf of drivers).

It's also a great example of bicycle permeability. Where would an equivalent number of motorists have parked?

It's funny how Transport Scotland just trots out the same old line about £58 million. However, they contradict themselves by admitting only £3.80 per head is spent. Hmmm. According to my calculator, £3.80 x 5.2 million population is only £19.76 million per year...

  15. My thoughts on this morning.

Probably got some facts wrong, but in the heat of being damned annoyed about it all....

That's a well written, reasoned piece, W.C. If only our political "superiors" responded well to logic and reason. If only.

Well that was four CCEers in direct line of camera - plus more in the vintage footage of PoP2.

Good piece, hope it's on at 6:30 too.

Text from my Mum said it was on the BBC1 news (and she's in England at my Aunt's just now)

Anyone have a link to a site with good stats on deaths (bikes/cars) and spending (roads/bikes). I feel an email coming on...

And I'll pop by the Ghost Bikes tonight to have a look and pay my respect. I'll probably have a spin round the back of Arthurs Seat if it's open after the fire. If anyone toots me, they'll be in for it.

I think it was also on Good Morning Scotland, I switched over to Radio Scotland about 10s before the end of the feature so can't be sure it was that.
Would have been in the last 5 or 10 mins of the programme. Can't listen to it here to check.

My partner phoned me to say that there was something on the telly just now about cycling safety, but she felt that it came across badly, as if the scottish government were already doing all they can.

Good effort by all involved, well done.

Presumably they'll be sure to have the area all swept away and sanitised before Keith Brown and the rest return from their summer hols.

We need an MSP bod to take up the case and get some air-time. Perhaps one of the Greens or someone in the opposition.

the Greens are of course on board. what we need is the actual government on board, and opposition to hold them to account.

I wasn't successful in re-arranging my work diary for this morning so was gutted to have missed it. I'll be cycling down after dinner tonight though to also pay my respects, particularly in light of the latest fatality, and to hopefully get a few photos on a longer exposure.

Am I right in thinking that the tombstone is now on the Meadows, but the bike (or bikes - a child's bike was mentioned but there's only one bike in the photos) is at the Parliament?

Tombstone on intersection of MMW and NMW (out of the way of cycles, or course!)

    2 bikes at Parliament.

Top story on BBC1 Scottish News.

Longer version than lunchtime, included interview with 'strict liability' campaigner Brenda Mitchell of Cycle Law Scotland.

Just got a call from an excited cousin who'd seen my brilliant acting skillz on the news. I didn't know the combination for the cable I was fiddling with, so had to mime locking it up when in actual fact I had merely shoved it in one notch.

MeepMeep, do you need any blurry models for the ghost bike long exposure shots?
