Approximate site of today's death. Junction of two A roads on a blind bend. Not a pleasant bit of road to cycle on, I'll wager.

BBC story updated -
"
The death of the cyclist near Drumnadrochit is ninth this year. This equals the total number killed in the whole of 2012.
"
Plus mention of this morning at Holyrood.
Sad timing.

Sickening.
I am physically anxious about getting on my bike to cycle home tonight.

@meepmeep I had a long time on friday to think about this. I was on the bike for 10 hours riding a pretty big distance. I thought lots about whether I should be scared or not. I decided that I needed to have a positive mental attitude and trust that there are good drivers out there, but that I need to protect myself and make sure I'm riding the safest I could. So even after 10 hours on the bike lots of shoulder checks and keeping my eyes on the road. These incidents are horrible but don't let it stop you cycling. We need more cyclists on the road, not fewer. Have a nice safe ride home.

Thanks, Alex. No chance of giving up cycling - it's too important a component of my health, fitness and quality of life.
The stubborn part of me thinks "giving up would let them win and that's not good for anyone", but the scale of lost lives recently is very difficult to ignore hence the uneasiness. It probably has a lot to do with identifying more with this incident this morning, having been out for a spin with the Hervelo ladies yesterday - that fatality could have been any one of us.
My thoughts are with the woman's family and friends.

Terrible news again.
Looking at the tyre tracks/rubber marks on the road, on google maps, it looks like an awful lot of drivers cut that corner at speed.

edd1e_h More likely that is scrubbing of 3 axle timber trailers. Unless major enhancements that 2 lane carriageway is only for a very small part of the A roads featured. A does not immediately confer 2 lanes and such wonderful space in the Highlands.
Sadly speeds on these roads are not easy to police robustly, and limits often exceeded.

The crash was between a black BMW X4, a blue Ford Focus Sport and a Vauxhall Corsa
FFS the way its reported is luridly moto-sensationalist.
if a cyclist crashed would the media obsess over the brand and colour of bike they were riding?

"FFS the way its reported is luridly moto-sensationalist."
I expect that came straight from the police.

..cops or journos, same difference - its like they are describing a tag team contest

This is more like the attitude the police, Crown & judiciary should be taking for reckless endangerment of vulnerable road users!

That's a half decent sentance it would be better if he was permabanned but its a good start.
Any one know the details of this one?

I don't mind the brand info re the cars. I think it may be significant in describing the nature of the incident.
More irked by the misleading use of "accident" of course but also "collision with". The cyclist is always listed first. They collide with a 60mph passing vehicle? Or the vehicle collides with them? It's a linguistic contortion akin to "Died after collision with a bullet". I think it's the writer unthinkingly attempting to dampen down the content of the article.

BBC report sentencing: "A pensioner whose careless driving caused the death of a cyclist in the Highlands has been banned from driving for five years."
Local press report says "according to the accident report Morrison would have had a clear view of 250 metres as he approached the cyclist and it was estimated he was travelling at between 33 and 46mph."

"
been ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid community work.
...
Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Morrison did not see the cyclist until it was too late.
His Fiat Panda went into the back of Mrs Brook's bike.
"
Any chance of an appeal for a more appropriate sentence?

Ok this was a hit and run, but the driver was jailed - "no other option"
"
“He has contributed to society greatly throughout his working life. He has been a good citizen.
“It is regrettable that he fell asleep at the wheel and took another life. He will have to live with that for the rest of his life.
“He accepts that the court has no other option but to impose a custodial sentence. The are no other outstanding offences or convictions against him.”

There's nothing like community service to raise driver awareness of the dangers cyclists face on the road!
