ok, the first time in a wee bit yesterday,it rained, heavily ! Its interesting to note, or not, that whenever its been dry and then wet, people in cars tend to forget how to drive in the wet ! Whenever this happens the number of rear whel drive cars esp, but not excusivley, seem to fall of at corners that they normally manage without worry !A polis friend of mine said within 4 minutes of the "first" showers then rtc, rta, crashes were reported ! If you are stopped waiting at recently changed traffic lights, be aware of that sliding whizzing noise behind you !
ot. the weather , both types and the school hols have a good side, my son is biking nearly every day now, sometimes just for........fun !

It was no fun on a bike... I was on my "long commute" and stopped for the first time somewhere near the petrol station in Currie/Juniper Green to put my waterproof on (it is also hi-vis and although in general I'm not a fan of hi-vis those conditions are conditions where anything that makes me easier to see wins out over some vague desire to appear "normal").

After a bit the rain was coming down so hard that I decided it wasn't safe, I could hardly see where I was going and there was so much water on the road it was hard to spot and deal with potholes, uneven bits, etc, so I pulled over and stopped in another bus stop near where the road goes over the bypass. Chatted to a woman whose nice summer dress was soaked through, at least I was in lycra and headed home... sure enough the rain eased off a little so I moved off again and picked my way cautiously down the Lanark Road - no dodgy overtakes thankfully - and then when I got to the Asda it stopped raining!

Got home, went straight into the bathroom and dumped everything I was wearing in the bath.

I was out in the rain and thunder storms last night on my way back from South Queensferry. I thought I was just being my usual crabbit driver self when I was grumbling about people not driving to the conditions, and can quite believe your police pal.

People forget that when there's been little rain for weeks (we've not had a sustained period of rain for, what, two months?), the roads are incredibly greasy.

A couple of hairy moments on the A90 FRB to Cramond where the carriageway was completely submerged. Of course, people were still exceeding the 40mph zone so they were on the flooding before they could react. Very irresponsible.

As MeepMeep says, it's not just forgetting how to drive in the wet, the road does become 'greasy'. The oil/debris on the road builds up in texture of the road in the dry then comes to the top in the wet. (Also during the dry weather the dust and lorry tyres polish the stones in the road, and they become slippier after summer than they are after winter weather.)

@Fimm - sounds like an 'experience'!

You obviously made some wise decisions - unlike some drivers.

One problem with 'weather' these days is that predicting it accurately seems increasingly difficult.

Currently forcast for most of Edinburgh area is not much rain today, some overnight then this at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon -

    we'll see.

SCOTS have been warned to expect further downpours after heavy rain caused flooding and made roads hazardous yesterday.
