  1. Okay, that makes it sound more dramatic than it actually was, but now I've sucked you in...

Heading from the Meadows to Tollcross I was filtering on the right of the queue (I could see which traffic was going through the crossroads ahead so had bags of time to get to the ASL). A girl who had been on the inside of the traffic cuts through. I manage a 'whoah!', then there's a coming together of my left pedal with her front wheel. We both stay upright (she was hardly moving, I was going slowly - safe y'see). She immediately apologised saying she wasn't looking. To be honest I should have seen her coming through the gap as well even when concentrating on possible traffic coming towards me.

Anyway, her mudguard had popped out the SKS safety things, which I tried to help her with, but she was better at it than me, and so we set off with a smile and laugh - no damage, no harm (by now a truck was coing the other way, and rather than slow down felt the way to get us to move was to scowl and accelerate - it worked).

It struck me again, although maybe this is because I'm just reasonable when no harm is done, that the immediacy of contact (as in being bale to talk and see expressions and so on) helps defuse any potential issues in situations like this, unlike when you're wrapped in your car and have a bump. Anyway, bizarrely it cheered up my commute.

Well that and she immediately admitted being at fault. I don't really think it is anything to be able to do with seeing the persons face since this would not explain all the pedestrians who walk out in front of you then scream abuse at you for having the audacity to be there. And I can't imagine that if(when) I am wiped out by one of the cyclists who barge onto cycle paths without looking or even slowing down or who barge through the bridges on the towpath at top speed ringing their bell in a "get the **** out of my way" type way, that any amount of sweet smiling from them is going to "diffuse the situation".

Incidentally, when filtering on the right I always look for cyclists on the left. This is because if traffic starts moving forward as you are filtering, many drivers will swerve left and I don't suppose they check for bikes there before doing so.

  3. See, I've never had a ped scream abuse at me... (and I don't cycle on the towpath for that very reason (too many peds and eejit cyclists) so my experience will be skewed I guess).

I wish I'd had my video camera on so I could see if she popped out from behind a BIG car and was obscured. Like you, checking to the elft is something I'm normally very aware of doing (and must have been doing to an extent as I saw her in time to execute a mini-swerve to avoid direct contact which would most certainly have seen us both on the deck).

Not sure I understand the reason for looking for cyclists on the left when you're filtering on the right though Min. If drivers are swerving left then surely that's not an issue for you being on the right? Am I reading that wrong?

I keep a check on the left in case of cyclists doing what happened this morning; car doors being opened; or drivers suddenly pulling out right to skip part of the queue (to turn right into a side street for example).

I do, however, stand by an assertion that depersonalisation caused by driving and therefore being utterly anonymous can lead to more conflict... ;)

Really? Wow. It mostly happens on the roads though, probably since at least on the cycle paths you know the peds are there whereas on the road, you never know when they are going to launch themselves in front of you.

Well no but it might be an issue for the cyclist being swerved at. :-)

Well I don't really know but I know I do like being able to interact with people so if this is the case for most folk then I'm sure it could lead to less conflict. There is also the fact that you are pretty much completely protected when you are in a car (unless the antagonist is driving a tank or something) so you can pretty much do what you like and I am sure that the drivers who show aggression towards cyclists and pedestrians would not act this way if the victims had any way to retaliate. Otherwise there would be constant beatings and murders going on.

  5. Yep, seriously. I've had plenty walk out in front of me (indeed, yesterday morning someone stepped straight out and my immediate response was "Helllloooooo?!? Tufty Club. Join it") but I've never actually received abuse from a ped. Does seem strange now I think about it.

And seems I was reading your post wrong. Indeed, for the cyclist on the inside a left-swerving car is something of a problem.

Today I was rolling down the right hand side of stationary traffic when a pedestrian almost got a leg full of chainring by stepping out between cars - luckily, we were both going slowly enough that nothing actually happened.

It does make you think though.

Hehehe, like it. I normally just clam up. I can try shouting it over the @@**!! you ***@@!! or I'll @@@!!**" next time. :-)

  8. It's possibly the first time I've ever managed a succinct 'get-the-point-across' shout that I've been happy with.
