The next Edinburgh Cycle Challenge runs from Monday 2nd August to Sunday 22 August. This time round our challenge is for you to challenge as many of your friends and family to get involved. You can win prizes and help us get at least 400 people, who haven’t been on a bike in the last year, to try cycling for 10 minutes or more.

There are lots of prizes that you could win just by taking part. Plus, there will be a special prize draw for anybody that encourages a new cyclist to log a trip!

You can register as an individual, or join with a group of friends or work colleagues to keep yourselves going. Register now at http://www.edinburghcyclechallenge.org.uk and let the fun begin!

NB: If you took part in the last Challenge, then you do not need to re-register.

So how does that compare with the Oxford cycle challenge? Given that Oxford has a population of around 150K and Edinburgh 450K.

Oxford had forty-eight organisations and 1,120 people taking part, and they cycled 76,000 miles.

The last Edinburgh Cycle Challenge, we has 138 organisations and 2,023 people taking part, and they cycled 151,970 miles. So I think Edinburgh did pretty well!

In Edinburgh, 249 people took part who hadn't cycled for more than a year before registering for the challenge (compared with 117 in Oxford), so with your help, we can get even more people rediscovering the joys of cycling!

Just a friendly reminder that the Edinburgh Cycle Challenge starts on Monday. If you registered for the last Cycle Challenge in May then you don't need to re-register, otherwise go to http://www.edinburghcyclechallenge.org.uk to register and start logging your trips!

    Good luck!

ps: there are some great prizes to be won if you can encourage someone who hasn't cycled in more than a year, to get on a bike and cycle for just 10 minutes. Prizes include a brand new Trek Valencia bike, a Tag-along, haircuts at Medusa Salon, bike accessories and much more. See http://www.edinburghcyclechallenge.org.uk/prizes for more details.

Are there any event similar to Cycle a Mile in Bromley, London happening in Edinburgh?

Cycle a Mile is an event, that I help with, run by Bromley Cyclists, one of the local London Cycling Campaign groups. The idea is to go for a very short off road distance around a park for people, particularly children and families to get the confidence to get back on/start riding the bike. The kids will often have enough energy to cycle around the park 5 times.

Once there is the confidence and people are happy, we're taking them out on to the local residential streets to give them some experience riding on the road, and build up the confidence there.

The 20 milers rides are no use to people who have barely ridden a bike recently and need some support and confidence building to get on the bike.

smsm1 - there is a campaign called TryCycling - http://www.trycyclinginedinburgh.org.uk/ - which is quite similar. It hasn't been running for a while, as the organiser is on compassionate leave, however they hope to be up and running some time this year.
