I was looking at getting involved in our CC for Northfield/Willowbrae but, as noted above, it's fallen through due to a lack of numbers. Given we're literally talking about a couple of dozen people needed to express an interest for it all to be legit, I find it mind-boggling that it wasn't possible by some way or another.

The (at times quite unpleasant) emails from the councillors and residents have been flying about over the past week or so clogging up the in tray and don't really make the inspiring case to get involved...

A rare example of sane comments to a Evening News article: http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/education/fears-portobello-high-will-dominate-community-vote-1-3126580#comments-area

(transparency: I'm Lee Kindness, I'm standing for Portobello CC)

    Pretty strong letter, extract -

If such a failing of democracy can occur at the very heart of the nation then what hope is there for other communities challenging Council decisions when Our officials and elected representatives have become so apparently beholden and enthralled to a discredited system of economics which shows such favour to private speculative interests over consideration for the local economy and the long term wellbeing of society?

Don't suppose mass resignations will lead to any necessary improvements.

Indeed. All that will happen is that there will be no Old Town CC until the next elections. So no scrutiny or response to the developers' lobby.

I have to say though it must be a thankless task being a Community Councillor. I presume the present incumbents just had enough, and faced with the same old faces decided to call it a day. Fair enough, but where are the new members going to come from?

I think it's quite a courageous decision to be honest. Do we expect councillors to work all hours knowing the council intends to ignore their submissions anyway? It sounds like they'd just be lending legitimacy to a sham process.
