Morning all, I've just managed to break the handlebars on my Surly (stood up to climb and when I pulled on the hoods the rh bar suddenly started flexing alarmingly :-o. ) And so I am looking for a replacement pair.
For those that don't know it, the Long Haul Trucker is a heavy duty tourer, I want to keep drops, and wondered if a CX set might provide more strength.
    Any suggestions?

That sounds a bit alarming, glad to hear it didn't result in an off. I'm afraid I am unable to offer recommendations, I've never paid much attention to bars other than how they fit. I wouldn't expect an undamaged bar to fail in normal use.

I would imagine the strongest bars are for track bikes, but their shape isn't that suitable for brake/STI levers.

Yeah I felt the flex and eased up immediately before anything to unpleasant could happen :-)
It's on bar end shifters (as it uses mountainbike gears, wheels etc) so my choice is pretty open, not a fan of the shape of some track bars I've seen but will have a wee look around.

I was surprised to see a note on my 'care' instructions for my Whyte CX bike stating that "Due to the light weight" of my handle bars that they should be replaced every 2 years. Never seen anything like that before.

Have a look at the On-One website. I've haven't heard of any problems with their bars and they're cheap, cheerful, and come in a range of questionable shapes.

I take it it's definitely not just the brake lever shifting? You mentioned pulling on the hoods...

I've two sets of drops I'm not using at the moment if you want some thinking-time to choose a fancy replacement. Both about 42cm, both old-style rounded rather than flattened ergo, both normal-size stem clamp diameter, one black and one plain metal.

  8. Been there, done that... It's... disconcerting....

Despite that break I'm still a Nitto fan. My Moustache were Nitto (currently waiting to see if a frame will come along that they can go on), and the Nitto Randonneur drops I have on the CX bike are great. A wee variety of widths - I'm monstrously wide, about 50cm, which gives great leverage (which is one benefit for CX), and given my reach is lovely and comfy.

Thanks chaps for all the advice and Winpig for the extremely generous offer. Def the bar twisting as I could see the flex in the bar end :-o
I think I'll have a wee look around the on-one website and see what I can pick up (not least because I'm too lazy to tape up bars and associated cables any more often than I can help, and I have other bikes to use meantime :-)).
Technically I fit around a 38cm wide bar (which is what I have on my road bike, and like), but the Surly gets used on tracks, and with a kiddie trailer or seat, so I had 42cm on and will probably stick with that, seems pretty monstrously wide to me ;-) 50cm should come with warning triangles for the outside edges lol
