hey all, ive been un interwebed recently so havnt been on here ! still here, still biking, still doing the hgv thing too !
you all prob know about the hows my driving stickers on the back og hgv, and others , I was recently called into my managers office by a stony faced office clerk who informed me that a complaint about my driving had been received and that my manager wanted to speak to me.................mmmm !
surprise surprise (cilla !) a member of the public had found a generic e mail addy for my company, had actually contacted them to praise, my "courtius and considerate driving"this mail went through the generic system for my large retail company employer who took the time to find out who was driving on the date on that road, A9 Dunkeld. It does work and was dead good to get the free lunch that I got !
Was in Edinburgh yesterday, in the car, doing retail therapy with the mrs, car will be left at the gyle later and me and my son will bike it into the city centre to pick up the watch that the "assistants " couldn't fix ! Look out for us, we will be looking very out of our depth, not sure of short cuts but having a blast !

Nice one splitshift - I'm glad your good driving got recognition! Also - I'm really pleased to see both cycling and HGV driving represented on here - sorry if you've been on before, but I hadn't seen your posts. HGV driving is a serious skill, and your knowledge is invaluable. I'm not sure if there are taxi or bus drivers on the forum - I'm fairly new here, but it'd be great if they were.

thanks all, not looking for glory here , but it does show that companies CAN find who was driving what , on a particular day, so any who say the cant when you are complaining are talking rubbish ! Actually a legal requirement to know ! Bikes, had an interesting time in the city centre, my son openly admitted he was terrified, he is 16, but we made it, safe , will have to get him back into serious traffic to build his confidence, he is nearly able to drive a car, so I can use that as an excuse to keep him interested in the highway code etc, for ALL road users !I Know that there are other HGVists on here but not sure about bus and taxi drivers, am sure they will let all know !
on a more technical note, my back brakes are getting worn , I will replace the pads, its a disc, can I replace thye brake fluid with conventional car brake fluid , or is it all very expensive bike specific stuff ?Running very old cars means I have stuff lying about, and I HATE spending money, unless its on cake and alcofuel !!!

Good for you. And good on your employer for rewarding you.

I hope they let the rest of the drivers hear about this as a bit of positive reinforcement.

    Hi splitshift,

I can only comment about hyrdraulic fluids in my experience of motor mechanics - I'm pretty sure the same principles apply for any hydraulic systems... There are mineral fluids and "DOT" type fluids - you should never mix any different DOT together (with some rare exceptions I think). Different DOT rating have different boiling points and viscosities - your system will be rated for a particular type. I think the last hydraulic system I saw on a bike was rated for mineral fluid.

You have to be very careful because if you use the wrong fluid or mix the wrong fluids then the seals will not cope with it and degrade. I've just finished reconditioning a power steering pump, and to refill properly you need twice the capacity of the recommended fluid to flush it and refill. I'm sure you know all that if you've worked on cars. I would check the recommendations of the manufacturer of your brakes and get that type of fluid.

I don't know anything about this really, but apparently DOT 5.1 doesn't degrade the seals in most systems and is recommended by some. Would need more research I suppose.

As far as making your son more confident on the road, have you both done the bikeability courses? I find the advice given there really well set out and helps to be assertive, unambiguous and safe in traffic.

You'd need to check with the manufacturer, Scott.

Shimano uses mineral oil in its hydraulic brakes. Hope and Avid brakes use regular DOT 5.1.

Magura use mineral oil too, and recommend their own particular type "Royal Blood". Definitely don't put car fluid in without checking that it's compatible first.

And it's good stuff too - I have battered and ancient Magura HS33 hydraulic brakes on my 'bent (recently repaired and rebuilt extremely well by GreaseMonkey), and my wee bottle of fluid I got 10 years ago is still perfectly usable.

Thanks, all info received ! @algo....yes I thought that but was hoping someone might say..yes no problem its all fine, but hey ho ! Don't suppose you want to rebuild the auto box on my MG ZT ? didn't think so !: )I have done bikeability course yes,to be honest I think it was more the fact that he hadn't really aclue where he was, deffinately out of his comfort zone, ill get him there ! Helix park thingy opening on Saturday, more safe off road routes to play on in the fawkirt area !

Would love to say I could but not a lot of experience with auto boxes! Is it the wet clutch friction plates you're looking to replace? If you've got a decent puller and press then I believe it's doable...
