The best way for a cyclist to stay safe is to sometimes break the rules, argues Chris Harvey in the Telegraph.
He thinks "cyclists should have an intermediate status between pedestrian and car, and be allowed to cross on a green man, while giving way to pedestrians. At least, under those circumstances, a cyclist will be aware that someone is likely to be stepping out into the road in front of them. Perhaps an even-handed solution would be to introduce £30 spot fines to crack down on ‘bad’ pedestrians, who step into the road without looking".

We kind of already do, if you feel unsafe at a particular junction, simply dismount, walk, and rejoin at the other side.

@baldycyclist, indeed, i do this most nights. If I am waiting for green to turn down st mary's st I then have timne at the cowgate junction to dismopunt, push on to pavemetn and cross on green men to avoid right turn to cowgate. this does not work if I get into a flow of trtaffic already going through the canon gait ligts then I have to take the right turn on the bike

Oh dear. I completely disagree. Is the poor old pedestrian to be further oppressed? Chris Harvey should be promoting best practice, not daft ideas like this.

The best solution is a cycle phase at traffic lights. They have this on the new cycle track on Waterloo Street in Glasgow (and of course all over NL). Works tremendously well.

Think so far we have all disagreed. No RLJ, where safe, get off and push as any cyclist can do at green man junctions. This annoys some motorists but they can gt over it, unless they buy the EEN, does anyone buy it? I read it on line if I have to,
