I need a new rear tyre for the folder, and would quite like a better one for the front as well, given a small plague of punctures last year.

Only options I can find are Schwalbe Durano which get dreadful reviews, and Continental Sport Contacts which seem to get better reviews (opinions?)

The current tyres are Continental Grand Prix, and when Bikeworks suggested I should get marathons to replace, I was delighted. Only, it doesn't seem there are marathons in that size.

    Anyone else have any recommendations?

Durano are certainly aimed at the "road" market, to be light and slick over tough and reliable and not neccessarily what you'd want in a commuting tyre.

"28-406" equates to a 20"x1" tyre, you don't neccessarily need to go with the same width as before which is why you probably haven't found something tougher as 1" is on the narrow side.

You can get a Marathon Plus in 20"x1.35"?

All the tyres you can think of:

I thought the Duranos are meant to be pretty good, and you can pick up the 2012 ones for half price from SJSC. Or from CRC go for Kojaks or the M+.

I wish Panaracer would make a 35-406 version of the Pasela Tourguard. Their Mini TS series doesn't roll as well as it should.

Edit: if it's for the narrow Rolf rim, SRD, I'd try to stay in the 25-35mm range. The brown-walled Conti Grand Prix were fast and grippy but a bit vulnerable I found.

Marathons (and Marathon Plus) are definitely available for 406mm rims. In fact there's a huge range of tyres in this size, as it's the BMX standard. I'd recommend puncture resistant tyres for small wheeled bikes, as there are more revolutions of the wheel per kilometre travelled, therefore more tyre wear across the same distance compared to larger wheeled bikes.

The only restrictions will be rim width, and mudguard clearance. I'd have thought 20x1.35" would work though. If you can stretch to 20 x 1.5" then you can go for standard Marathons, which will save you nearly £10 each tyre if you shop around. They're pretty near indestructible in my experience.

Nope. can't go as wide as 1.5 or I would not have an issue. Will see if we can squeeze 1.35s on though.

Then again, the 2012 Duranos are _cheap_ ....

    hmmmm...

Have 28x700c Sport Contacts on the road bike. They're decent but I don't think they'd stand up well to really hard use like a Marathon would. Problem is they're the made in Malaysia (I think) contis and they're of distinctly lower quality than the German made ones. Rubber compound is okay, not too plasticky, but the overall construction and finish isn't so good. No punctures yet in about 500 miles of use.

okay. I've ordered the Marathon pluses in hopes of saving money over long term.

I had checked out chainreaction and sjs even before arelcat linked to them, but in the end bought from http://brilliantbikes.co.uk/ who've given me really good customer service in the past. slightly cheaper than the others, and free postage too.

Now who's going to help me get them on the bike?

There has to be one round where the tyre change happens up hilly, open moorland in January while horizontal sleet is getting driven sideways like bullets by the howling subzero wind. And no fancy merino layers are allowed. This will faithfully replicate conditions in which mtbers are expected to fix flats.
