It seems that more bicycles were sold than cars in Spain last year – just one sign of Europe's wider economic malaise. Wherever you live in Europe, if you've bought a new bicycle in the last year – or you've given up your car in favour of cycling or walking – we'd like to hear from you. To take part, please show us a picture of your bike via GuardianWitness and tell us why you bought it and how your life has changed as a result. We'll feature some of your stories on the Guardian business live blog.

Incidentally, this isn't going to happen soon here - car sales are a million or two per year whereas cycle sales are 3 or 4 thousand.

There are interesting figures up to 2011 on the CTC site (http://www.ctc.org.uk/resources/ctc-cycling-statistics). There was a big jump in numbers after 2002 but the increase in value seems to largely down to more expensive cycles being bought (CTC says inflation).

The Guardian has a chart showing bike sales outstrip car sales in the UK:

PS Funny how the countries where cars outsold bikes in 2011 were Spain, Italy, and Belgium.

No wonder these countries never produce any grand tour or classics winners. (Joke.)

Oh dear - I made two mistakes - sorry. The cycle stats missed a factor of 1000 - didn't read the graph legend. So the Guardian chart is consistent. Plus the CTC link above doesn't work (mysteries of internet - it seems to be dynamic in some way).

Amir, the problem with the ctc link is that it includes ")" at the end of the url.

I was able to see the page by removing this.

Here's the link that should work:
