This is what Leamington Walk looks like between White house Loan and Parchment Rd

I walked along the towpath from the pedestrian bridge just west of Meggetland to Hermiston House Bridge this morning. I was very glad not to be on a bicycle, although in places I had to take it quite carefully by foot, but most of the time I was able to walk along the grass verge to avoid the worst of the icy snow. I'd say around half of the cyclists who passed me had studded tyres, another half had wide MTB or hybrid tyres, while the others were on varyingly narrow tyres up to a skinny-tyred, single-speed road bike. I only saw one wobble which was from someone with hybrid tyres...

    “Parchment Rd”

Is that the one with fading cycle lanes?

@chdot, no it's the one with veteran cyclists hurtling down it, their tanned leathery skin flapping in the breeze.

Restalrig Path slidey even with studs this morning - most of it between Restalrig Road and Leith Links is undulating ice with a thin layer of water. Some patches of the same on the Holyrood-Pollock path.

Had to walk part of my route this morning (D'mains park to Quality Street).

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Silverknowes path had been cleared and well gritted.

I have no pix but it was mainly fine wet cycling in this morning. The occasional sections had hard packed snow and ice, like Barton Ave, Brae Park Road and the bridge at the Burnshot Road / junction/bridge on the slip as you head towards South Queensferry.

Those patches of hardpack were interesting this morning as they have become rutted. Snow tyres grip ice fine but when it becomes a series of 20 parallel ice tracks then nothing will stop your bike occasionally veering of course.

Yesterday: three bonus hours in Edinburgh Airport.

Today: still waiting on 16:00 flight from Kirkwall. Runway closed till 18:30 (at least) for deicing.

At least the beer is good?

Some nice big snow patches on prom towards Cramond.

ICE trike is the way to get over the frozen stuff. Doesn't sound nice though. Fuego has weight in right place to get over this on Kojaks. Steel bikes have some advantages.

@unhurt - not so many planes flying over at Cramond today
@Iain McR - Eddie at Boardwalk Beach Club cafe always in a cheery Hawaiian mood - although he thought council could do better on paths

I could write an operatic cycle. Finally on a plane. We have been on it for a while. It has not moved. Now there is more ice on the runway...

Rule 2 is not in effect in my internal monologue.

  21. Livingston was a white-out this morning. Only doable on the mountain bike.

Got hit from behind at some lights as the driver couldn't stop in the snow. Only a bit of a bruise on my hip and elbow and bike was fine.

Pleased to make the rest of the journey safely.

    @galaxy

Have yourself and the bike checked professionally? It can take time for damage to either to show up....

Advice has been issued to drivers urging them to avoid travel if possible as Scotland and the Lothians braces itself for more winter weather.

The Met Office “be prepared” alert until 10pm could see up to 10cm falling at low levels and 30cm on the highest routes.

Semi-heavy snow just started at Heriot-Watt. I hear that it is pretty crazy in Glasgow at the moment. Take care!
