    Reminder re gritting:

    Off-road cycleway gritting
Cycleway Priority 1 - these routes will be the first to receive treatment whenever weather conditions dictate, and will be pre-treated where possible, when frost, snow or ice is forecast. Areas treated include

Middle Meadow Walk (SRD: but not NMW or SMW, although they are often done)
    Leamington Walk in Bruntsfield Links
Innocent Railway Path, between St Leonards Lane and The Jewel at ASDA
sections of the Caledonian Cycle Track, North Edinburgh Cycle Network.

@crowriver - the metoffice yellow warning, is low probability, high impact - so probably won't happen, but if it does there might be lots of snow.

The actual forecasts are showing 2/3C and light rain. Really snow is only likely in the margins of error.

Oh and I had some ice grippy tires, and a massive stack of firewood delivered this morning, as well as finding the snow shovel and grit thus ensuring a mild winter....

    Cheers
    Chris

On Sunday they were forecasting -1C this morning. BBC TV Weather last night was promising blizzards across high ground all over Scotland.....we shall see.

Motorists are warned of potentially difficult driving conditions today with up to 15cm (6in) of snow forecast to fall on Scotland’s highest roads.

A Met Office yellow - “be aware” - severe weather warning is in force from 3pm until 10am tomorrow for much of western and central mainland Scotland.

From those that have experienced it before, what condition is the canal towpath likely to be in?

    Any advice for cycling it?

I join at Westerhailes and take it all the way to Lochrin Basin. This will be my first winter commuting from here - don't know what to expect.

@CJC if it does snow, don't expect any official gritting on the towpath, which means it will become compacted and icy the more traffic passes over it. I usually switch to the bus when this happens until such point that it thaws, although if you have studded tyres then you should be ok.

When it is wet and cold enough, then certain parts of the path are more likely to ice up than others, in particular the 'S' bend at Wester Hailes just before the canal turns from east-west to run south-north alongside the bypass...

@Paddyirish, The coldest winter since my great-grandmother knitted her last pair of long-johns and the warmest January since June respectively. Of course both scenarios are firmly being pinned on three high court judges and a plaintiff.

Seem to be changing their mind on how snowy it will be here. At the moment it looks like sleet. I've got Schwalbe Winters on a Brompton and the Longstaff.

Wide reports of a deepening area of depression heading in from the west today following an initial gale of hot air.

My bin's already frozen shut twice this evening. Frost on the cars outside. I'll stick to the roads on my trip to Cammo to collect some secondhand child plastic.

Saw it was going to be -2 overnight so i decided to walk rather than risk ice on the cycle from Newington in to Waverley. This was over cautious, the roads and pavement were completely fine. There was impressive fog though.

A towpath update would be appreciated in terms of potential frost and ice and also whether it has been closed again yet...

From the train Fife looks like one large, beautiful ice sheet.

Frosty roads as we climbed from Gilmore Place up to Bruntsfield, but no real ice.

jdanielp - might be a bit late now for this: towpath wasn't frozen when I cycled along just before 8. Slightly slidey on the cobbley bits under the bridges. Completely open on the section I took from Westerhailes to Lochrin Basin.
