Good quote from Cycle Summit "The car is the guest" in our villages, towns and cities.

“The City of Edinburgh Council’s ambitious plans for improving Leith Walk aims to deliver an exemplar commuter corridor. Subject to finalising designs, the Scottish Government is pleased to be able to offer support for this project which has significant potential for promoting much enhanced levels of walking and cycling by across the city.”

WELL - this time last year 'no chance/no money'.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that quite a few people who post here have made a difference. Obviously along with local residents, traders and organisations - especially Greener Leith.

Yes, but is it going to be useful, or just another Low Quality Bike Corridor?

Well I suppose it is positive that the first summit was not just a talking shop as we had feared. The minister came with goodies to distribute, which is undoubtedly good news. Still not enough, but encouraging nevertheless.

It will be interesting to see what other local authorities bid for. Glasgow, Midlothian, Fife, Dundee: we're looking at you!

Here is the predicted total Scottish Government expenditure on active travel for the current and next two financial years:

    2013/14: £21.35m
    2014/15: £32.2m
    2015/16: £27.3m

This is walking and cycling, although the vast majority is spent on cycling. This includes the oft mentioned £58m and the extra £20m. 2014/15 and 2015/16 do represent increases between a third and a quarter of the average annual expenditure on active travel since around 2006/7. To put it into context - the sum spent on cycling in the next three years will be spent on the Forth Crossing in the next four months.

I think certain PoPular campaigns can take a bow for securing this extra funding - without their drive, determination and relentless efforts this would not have happened. They have helped change the weather for everyone campaigning for more funding for cycling and provided ammunition/comfort for firendly politicians at local and national levels.

However, while this is all great - it is easy to forget that annual expenditure on cycling is still running at around a quarter of what it really needs to be to secure a step change in cycling. Also, action to tackle the horriffic tally of cycling deaths and injuries appears to be absent from this backslapping bean feast. Also, experience tells me that quite a bit of this expenditure will be going on poor quality infrastructure.

Many politicins might now be convinced that they have done cycling - I am sure we will keep them right on that one.

"Also, experience tells me that quite a bit of this expenditure will be going on poor quality infrastructure."

    Yes, but -

The details have still to be completed/approved.

The greater 'we' aren't going to go 'well that's the money sorted, what shall we campaign about next?'

This is now a 'national' 'exemplar' and (more or less) joins St. Andrew House and Victoria Quay.

I reproduce my comment from the Leith Walk thread below, for those who may have missed it (Still important to keep up the pressure on the Leith Walk project, it's not yet "job done").

As an American once said: all politics is local. 'We' are Edinburgh cyclists, it's in 'our' interests to press for Leith Walk to be as good as it can be within the budget available.

Leith Walk is a modest start, but let's not underestimate its significance in beginning to change the city for the better. Next objective: keep up the pressure to get this realised to a good standard.

After that, the next targets are surely Princes Street and George Street? Oh, and maybe finishing/improving some of the dodgier shared use paths around the place (eg. Seafield Road from railway bridge to Porty Prom).

Hmm. Pedal from Parliament to Victoria Quay via St Andrew's House, including going along Leith Walk, inviting people involved in decisions concerning the 'finalising' of the LWIP?

The folk at the Leith Walk consultation didn't seem desperately proud of the QBC.
