Roundabouts are not appropriate for an urban area since they act as a significant barrier to pedestrian movement and create several conflict points for cyclists.

Am I right in thinking that it's best to wait until after the new council are elected before writing to councillors about things like Klaxon mentions?

With regard to the 1600 spaces, it wouldn't be so bad if they removed a similar number of on-street spaces and converted them back to footway/cycleway/public squares etc.

    Needn't be an either/or.

'The Council' gets on with things while politicians are concentrating on rearranging themselves.

Might be worth asking candidates specific questions.

IF they answer before the election they might get your vote.

Just to show this is 100% derived from the pre-construction tram design

    Co-ordinated Development

The Council encourages a comprehensive approach to redevelopment whenever possible, and the preparation of development frameworks or master plans, to identify the full design potential of creating successful places. In this regard, development opportunities exist immediately beyond the boundaries of the St James Centre that could contribute to the successful redevelopment of the area; namely St Andrews Square, Picardy Place and Greenside Row. Proposals for the St James Centre should have regard to the development potential and proposals for these sites. The Council would expect masterplan proposals for the St James Quarter to consider these sites and how they might be successfully integrated into the wider redevelopment of the area

@SpokesLothian @StreetWurrier @LivingStreetsEd @CyclingEdin This plan is from the approved trams TRO. I doubt the plan will have change much.

Is the traffic up Leith Walk/Leith Street much worse in rush hour now, than it was a few weeks ago? I went past at 7.30 this morning and it was already backing up down to London Road. Must be horrendous at half 8.

Id: Many will have been entirely avoiding Leith Walk while it was single file past Pilrig St. The queues to cross the junction were no longer than they are now with full capacity

  15. The on/off ramps of the new segregated lanes on Leith Walk will never be clear of parked vehicles, given that they're already blocked by vehicles parking on the double-reds in front of them before they even open. The off-ramp coming downhill is right outside the Coop, where people park as they're 'just nipping into the shop', or the Coop's delivery vehicles park (like the Breadwinner Bakery van was doing this morning).

They'll be another pointless piece of the new infra unless there's constant parking enforcement - and let's face it, we never got the level of enforcement promised when the new painted parking bays cycle lanes further down the walk were opened...

Unless they have a team of parking attendants permanently stationed on Leith Walk, I can't see how they can really defeat the sheer volume of opportunistic double red/double yellow/double parking/bus lane blocking/pavement parkers in the area.

Maybe if they do an enforcement 'blitz' they'll deter the repeat offenders, but it won't stop the random opportunists...

CCTV enforcement of the Pilrig St junction area would be a start

Not sure if allowed in Scotland but happens in London

Double reds are open and shut. No stopping at any time

Edit: CCTV was banned in 2014. War on motorists and all that.

@Klaxon, not entirely banned. From your link:

"Parking officers will now carry out all essential enforcement, limiting the use of CCTV to issue tickets by post to critical routes such as schools, bus lanes, bus stops and red routes where public transport must be kept moving for safety reasons."

Bus lanes on most of Leith Walk IIRC...

Missed that! Maybe hope then. I think remote monitoring is the only way that this will be solved, short of stationing a man there all day (totally unaffordable)

Surely with the fines, a person stationed there all day would pay for themselves...

I have it in my mind that CCTV enforcement was never made legal in Scotland in the first place but I might be wrong.

  22. Perhaps we need to engage BMX riders and Danny McAskill wannabes to ride up and over any vehicles parked on the double-reds blocking the on and off ramps?

Who'd need to go out to the bike park when you can recreate the experience on Leith Walk? ;-)

Citybound cycle path has been laid as far as the Tailend. Paving is lagging behind as those squads still seem to be working on the Albert St jn.

Not much happening on the Leith side just now, repaving is complete up to the surface level access into the new Place for People development.

The temporary road centre kerbing has been removed all the way up to Vittoria which makes 1) Filtering much easier when traffic is queued and 2) Overtakes by cars much easier when it's not.

Signs up on Brunswick and McDonald Roads that they will be closed from next Tuesday (2/5)

Has that lamp-post been taken down yet? It was still there on Wednesday morning, with fresh aggregate being compacted all around it...

All of the brown lamp posts are still there.

It's been a different squad each step of the way:

    Diggers
    New pole planters
    Sparks
    Old pole removers
    Pavement relayers

Progress on Albert St - McDonald Rd has stalled 100% since last Friday with the only change being a bit of infill suggesting the pavement may be abandoned unfinished for some coming weeks.

Quite unimpressed if this is the case given the previous fast and good quality progress on this section. Paving squads walked off the job?

Some progress hole digging at McDonald Rd but assuming a similar work schedule as Pilrig St, not much will seem finished here for a long time as building new cable routes for the new light positions seems to take quite a long time.

THAT lamppost was still there too, last time I looked. It has lost its lamp, and presumably been disconnected. Will someone please just take it away?

I don't think that area will be completed until the first building at Shrubhill is watertight. That nice big floating bus stop needs carved in two for the access road into the underground car park.

    Teams back in this week

Paving around Albert St nearly done and lifting of old slabs between Albert & Brunswick Rds has begun

Lots of holes now around the McDonald Rd junction, they seem to have unearthed quite a heavy but previously unknown water leak. That sort of thing can be a big cause of pot/sinkholes, so good thing it's been found now.

I've noticed the temporary pedestrian crossing runs the green man far more frequently than the crossroads did and crossing is very pleasant as you are only needing to traverse one lane each way.

With the exception of the removal of the 'temporary' rubber mid-kerb installed by the tram project, nothing is happening to the road surface anywhere for now. That came right at the end of the Pilrig St work.
