Why don't they have wands on them?

I'm angry now (not with you, Min :-) )

On who's say so has this happened? How many complaints have there been? Why aren't people able to spot armadillos that are used the world over? Why do the Council keep failing on every level to deliver this stuff?!!

As Stickman says, get some bloody wands on them!

    Seems like a knee jerk

It wasn’t mentioned in Thursday’s stakeholders update

Trip hazard. But nothing is done about the vehicles parked on the pavements and breaking up the surfaces resulting in far greater trip hazards.

So fully protected lanes weren't built because of cars and the compromised design is bad for pedestrians. Slow handclap.

I just wrote an email commenting on how much I enjoyed using the Leith Walk lanes at the weekend, being sure to mention the armadillos...

@robyvecchio was there any reaction to the disbelief of those attending?

Just wrote an email as well, trying to explain why it's a terribly disappointing decision. The armadillos didn't stop everyone (the lure of bacon rolls is too strong for some, it seems), but it was lovely not to have to swerve around the numpties quite as much.

Nice while it lasted I suppose.

It's true. Bacon rolls have a lot to answer for in cycle infra installations.

Well, they're just going to have to properly segregate the cycle lanes now, aren't they? FFS (again).

The wonderful bronze pigeons were removed from the top of Leith Walk because folk kept tripping over them.

Any street designer who failed to comprehend that people would trip over black rubber cushions on a black road fringed with pubs should be dismissed.

I'm sure they all did predict this and just got ignored. Spring-loaded wands are the obvious solution so presumably they'll install a trench or a line of tethered hyenas or something.

Hyenas may not be a bad shout - even the drunkest of passerby would probably steer well clear!

Remember: it's fine for cyclists to be constantly exposed to dangerous vehicles with no segregation, but perish the thought that a pedestrian might trip.

On the same logic we should be filling in all the tramlines immediately.

Armadillos out hyenas in. Not clear if the megaphone belongs to the guy or the hyena.

The "wands" should be made of concrete with a depleted Uranium interior and steel spikes on the outside.

That would keep the cars out.

Plastic springy wands are just going to get trashed in days.

That is an amazing picture. But I feel sad for the hyena. I don't think they're temperamentally suited to being muzzled / kept on leads.

@PS Well, they're just going to have to properly segregate the cycle lanes now, aren't they?

    We can dream!

  20. Remove all kerbs across Edinburgh. They're a trip hazard.

I do wonder how quickly broken pavements that are trip-hazards would be repaired if we complained. I suspect it'd still take ages.

I'm always amazed at how quickly action is taken when people aren't happy with something that's been installed to improve cycling conditions (see also the chicane installed on the new Balgreen Tram Path near the road at Balgreen, done within a couple of weeks of parents complaining that their kids might run down the path and straight into the road and get run over).

    About 3 months

A parking restriction pole on Elgin Terr was hit last year lifting the paving stones it was set into 2ish inches higher than the surrounding pavement

I reported it and the pole was removed reasonably quickly but the stones not reset for quite some time. IMHO the tripping hazard was worse in this period as there wasn't a wonky pole to draw your attention to not walk there.

    The pole was never replaced.

E-mail to LW Project Team (similar sent to local councillors):

    ---

I write to express my dismay and disappointment at the decision to remove so-called ‘armadillo’ rubber lane dividers on approaches to the brand new segregated Leith Walk cycle lanes.

Surely it is not beyond the wit of Council officers to realise that without these lane dividers, motor vehicles will illegally park on or otherwise block the entrances to the new segregated cycle lanes, thereby rendering them completely useless. The result will be that cyclists will be forced to remain on the carriageway, exposed to danger from sharing road space with heavy motor traffic and completely defeating the purpose of creating the cycle lanes in the first place. Why has so much public money been wasted on cycle lanes which will now go unused?

I exhort you and your team, as a matter of urgency, to either re-instate the ‘armadillos’ or to investigate alternative methods of physically separating motor vehicles from the approaches to the Leith Walk cycle lanes, for example using bollards, planters, or spring loaded plastic wands fixed to the road surface.

Armadillos are just the tip of the iceberg with phase 5 and 6 delayed until the tram decision. Most of the time was spent arguing why we are still waiting for phase 4 to finish. With the festive embargo we are looking for early January finish.

Can you sum up what was revealed about Phases 5+6, Leith St, and Powderhall, and the mood of the room?

"Armadillos are just the tip of the iceberg"

Well there's a mental image. Giant reflective rubber animals buried 9/10ths in the tarmac of Leith Walk.

Clearly a very poor decision to remove the armadillos.

But what I'd like to know is how in the blue blazes has the council found the resources to do this removal work so quickly?

Very many other, real, hazards with simple remedies (e.g. leaf jam on NEPN, recently responsible for a broken arm) have been reported to council with absolutely no action taken.

    How is that defendable?

This council is unaccountable in the extreme. I think we all know this. What to do? Protest?

On the subject of resources, the project is still in a clean up/snagging phase, so a squad can be found quite straightforwardly to carry out small works like this
