New discovery in the cold weather. The bike lane "on ramps" have a trail of ice across them according to the camber and the new wider kerb (flowing downhill at least).

Good grief. BIG delays ahead. A bit crafty though - if tram goes ahead, presumably stages 5 & 6 will be "bulldozed" through like Picardy Place has been?

    From T&E committee papers:

    ---

7.10 - Leith Programme Close–Out Report Constitution Street to Picardy Place

1.1 It is recommended that the Committee:

1.1.1 Notes that the delivery of Leith Programme Phases 5 and 6 have been incorporated into the Edinburgh Tram York Place to Newhaven project.
1.1.2 Approves the cancellation of the Leith Programme Phase 5 TRO and RSO process; and
1.1.3 Approves the cancellation the Leith Programme Phase 5 Public Hearing.

    Cancellation
3.8 It is recommended that the Phase 5 TRO/RSO process and Public Hearing are formally cancelled and that the Council wraps both Phase 5 and 6 into the TRO process for Edinburgh Tram – York Place to Newhaven which is due to commence in the third quarter of 2018.
3.7 Should the Edinburgh Tram – York Place to Newhaven project not receive Council approval at the end of Stage 2, the Council would seek to reinstate the Leith Programme team to deliver Phases 5 and 6 separate from any other major projects.
3.8 It should be noted that this would require the resubmission of a further TRO/RSO for consultation.

    Tedious!

At least they managed to avoided such niceties for Picardy...

"At least they managed to avoided such niceties for Picardy..."

Did they? Not for Leith Street / Greenside Place. Maybe they haven't actually issued the TRO/RSO for Picardy Place yet?

So, game's a bogey? Any hope we may have had for a continuing cycle-focused development process will turn into an also-ran for a protracted trams extension? Or am I being too cynical.

Horrific. I guess I'm not going to be cycling down Leith Walk ever again...

As I say in my tweet, you've got to wonder how many injuries to cyclists they are expecting with that layout. It will be carnage.

Not sure it could be worse.

    So many acute angles

    So few pedestrian crossings

There is a full kerb line re-alignment north of Pilrig St undoing all the pavement widening but without providing separated cycle lanes (advisory paint into the back of parking bays only)

These plans were substantively drawn in 2016 and amended/issued only 4 times since - first time anyone's seen them outside of the project? Tail is wagging the dog again.

So much for Leith Programme Phase 1-3 being 'future proof' for the trams

Were these plans/details not available at Spokes meeting?

Nope. Thought they were embargoed till tomorrow, actually.

When it says 'CYCLE WAY (SEGREGATED AND ON ROAD)' in the plan legend does that mean not segregated? Like a bus lane or something?

Is it just me that finds these plans make my eyes go funny?

    Pathetic! (CEC’s PR failure/secrecy.)

OK, so I have made combined images of tram traffic order [1] & landscape [2] proposals to give a picture of the whole thing. Refer to original drawings [3] for details.

Why is there a large median strip running the full length of Leith Walk? How can that possibly be a good use of road space? The strip certainly seems to be wide enough to, at least, provide for a continuous segregated cycle lane up-hill. I am sure with a bit of imagination that space available could be used to provide continuous lanes on both sides.

@Morningsider - that's for the poles for the tram power lines.

If only we had some futuristic technology that allowed tram cables in Edinburgh to be supported by lamp posts on the pavements:

So the top section of Constitution Street is to be closed to bikes (tram & bus only), but don't worry, they've offered a European-style detour, riding on the RHS of Academy Street!

Some folk may have noticed that the ends of the cycle tracks on LW north of McDonald Road/Brunswick Road are fenced off with orange barriers and have been excavated, and are coned off. They were still digging trenches this afternoon. Some trenches already have some concrete and steel reinforcing rods in them. Piles of kerb slabs stacked behind the orange plastic.

Looks like the segregation kerbs and bollards are going in. Sign said work commencing 24 April for 3 weeks...

Tracks still usable despite huge signs plonked on them and barriers at either end. Some dismounting and pushing may be required. Alternative is to mix it with general traffic in a single lane either way: know which I prefer.

Nice ‘parking in cycle lane’ video (with response by Adam)

"many parking inconsiderately but not illegally"

I think all the culprits in the video are parked illegally as well as inconsiderately. Is double parking one the offences which needs the police to deal with it, rather than the council?

Wasn't there a realisation at some point last year that double parking adjacent to a parking bay isn't actually against any laws at all, provided you don't block traffic (and possibly that you don't block anyone in.)

Even if double parked, you still have to obey the regulations of the road linings / bays to be legal.

Presumably for a bay that means you would have to buy a ticket if required. That said, you can get a parking ticket for parking outside the lines in the permit holders bays even when you have a valid permit.

The Leith bays are either loading only or free parking for X minutes. Seeing as it's usually relatively short-term loading that causes the problem, I think they're "using" the bays legally.
