Quicker for pedestrians... no more waiting several minutes after pressing a decoy button.
Ed1 - the law* states that vehicles only have to stop at a zebra crossing when a pedestrian is on the carriageway. In effect, pedestrians have to step out in front of traffic to get it to stop. The fact that most people stop if it looks like someone wants to cross is simply down to their good nature/a misunderstanding of the law (delete as applicable).

Presumably if a pedestrian is in a position where they could step into the crossing a driver needs to be going at a speed which would allow them to stop before the crossing. So if a pedestrian is waiting by the crossing then an approaching car would need slow down and be ready to stop.
I hope this belisha business is a strong indication that the Council is not planning to reverse plans to give Leith Walk a 20mph speed limit...
acsimpson - sounds reasonable, but the vehicle wouldn't have to stop unless the pedestrian stepped onto the crossing.

I agree. All High Streets should have regularly-spaced zebra crossings. The ability to cross more-or-less at will is an essential feature of a civilised street. And the law needs to be changed to give priority to people showing intent to cross.

Leith Walk Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) Reports
On 28 October 2014, Transport and Environment Committee gave its approval to set aside the single objection and to make the TRO for the proposed road layout in the area between Balfour Street and Lorne Street, meaning that our Contractors can progress working on the proposed road layout in that area. In addition, following the public hearing held in early September, the independent reporter appointed to consider objections received to the TRO for the larger area covering Pilrig Street to Crown Place has recommended that no changes need be made to the Council’s currently proposed measures, as amended in response to these objections.

Quality bike infra! Trust Leith Walk motorists to really go for it: not content with legal parking space? How about some good old fashioned Leith Walk illegal double parking? Just like the "good old days"!

The threat of a mobile council car-crusher would have this problem sorted in a few days.
The problem we will get on Leith Walk (it used to be the Greenways, before that plain old double parking) is well established to the point of being endemic and is one of a bad attitude being allowed to persist by a lack of enforcement. Why the council don't open a Leith Walk ticket warden base is beyond me, they'd be raking it in.
I think the only thing that will get the council to take enforcement seriously is when (if) the tram ever gets down Leith Walk.

Apparently the 'deal' is that enforcement is on hold until LW is 'finished.
I think one tram legacy is that parking restrictions somehow became 'invalid'.
Didn't I read somewhere (it might even be on this thread...) that "they" are going to wait until all the Leith Walk work is finished, then have a week or two of warning people that parking is about to be enforced, and then enforce it, hard?
The problem is that double parking isn't a traffic warden issue, is it? Could they ask the police to join in on the enforcement (just like the police do projects on getting cyclists to have lights, for example)?

Since the police will say they dont have the resources, let the neds police LW. Any illegally parked vehicle can be vandalised at will. I'd enjoy swinging my d-lock all the way up and down.
Will never eat at La Favourita, or patronise any business that allows its staff to block cycle lanes.
Looks like there is room to thread your way between the double parked cars there, crowriver.
Of course if they lost a mirror as you went through (or if you had a washing machine on trailer) that would be a bad thing wouldn't it... ;)
If it's anything like the Shore revamp a few years ago, which removed parking and made it one way for everything other than buses and bikes, you'll probably find that the council haven't actually applied for the necessary TROs and you'll have over a year to wait until they can get them, go to court to overrule the single objector and then finally be free to enforce them.
Thing that always gets me about Leith Walk (and a few other places) is the cars that would be double parked if there happened to be a car parked in the spaces to the left of them. I've actually seen a car parked in the bus / cycle lane with its hazards on (so must be all right then I suppose!) with no car in the space to the left of it nor the 3 / 4 spaces either before or after where they are parked!

Hilarious that it's an "exemplar" cycle lane when it's not even a firm draft yet and probably ripe to be scrapped. "If wishes were cycle lanes," etc.
There's only one question remaining then - will the Scottish Government confirm that it won't hand over the millions earmarked for Leith Walk, since we're not going to get our commuter corridor but a tram track instead?
This is the minimum we should demand IMO, in the same way that the New Forest has just been given the shaft for trying to misappropriate money spend ring-fenced funds in an inappropriate way.
There's a simple solution, surely?
Reduce the southern end of Leith Walk to one lane of traffic in each direction. Either that, or get rid of all the car parking, loading bays, left filter lanes, etc.
I mean, look at Elm Row: segregated end-on car parking behind a fence, hedges and trees, a wide pavement and a bus stop. Yet no room for segregated cycle lanes?
The previous design totally subordinated pedestrians and cyclists to the greater priority of motorised transport. I would suggest that, if the new designs are significantly worse, there should be some kind of protest.
