Edinburgh villa set to be demolished for row of houses despite 96 objections

Plans were submitted in March for the development on Cammo Road, but locals in the area have voiced concerns over an increase in traffic and the visual impact it would have on the immediate area

Fewer than one in five voters are “hard nimbys” who are opposed to local housebuilding under almost any circumstances, according to polling by YouGov that will give a boost to the government in its aim of building 1.5m homes this parliament.

An MRP model based on a 12,000-person survey shows between 15% and 20% of British voters would almost never support housing developments near them, with the rest willing to do so if certain conditions are met.

Some residents have voiced objections with the proposed extension to Frogston, mainly regarding the parking provision.

Objectors cited a high volume of traffic and not enough parking for residents nearby the school.

"Upon returning home from work, we struggle to find parking spaces as there are no designated spots for residents.”

Over half the houses on this estate have a two-car driveway and a garage, but aye carry on

I've walked through there occasionally at busy times (I think normally at weekends, where it's been busy with folk using the sports facilities rather than the school itself).

Very possible that my experiences weren't representative, but everyone seemed to insist on driving round Auchnacarry Street to drop off as close to the door as possible. If half of those people were willing to walk 50m further, there'd be far fewer problems. If they walked or cycled the whole way then even better, of course.

A bigger car park would also probably just mean more people driving round Auchnacarry Street.

New Edinburgh town with 7,000 homes and two schools approved

A new tram stop will built in the town centre, which planners said will be about as wide as the Grassmarket, with a ‘linear park’ running through the middle of the neighbourhood.

Planning officers told the meeting the town’s streets will be “low parking and low traffic” through use of “mobility hubs, public transport connections and active travel routes”.

And I have a bridge to sell them.

    Well, they started it…

I wouldn't want to live there without a car. For one thing, trying to get your kids up to the wide variety of classes at Oriam by bike without any meaningful infra and an extra 7000 cars on the road (plus even more than that as the chicken farm area is also to be developed)

    It's nice in theory...

Absolutely - this has been my observation when cycling through (as an opportunity to avoid Kaimes crossroads when headed to Shops / Leisure at Straiton, this estate is a wonderful cut-through (Greenwell Wynd) to Old Burdiehouse Rd and the subsequent shared pavement sections (of which the west side has one less road crossing to make at the bypass, but no signalised crossings at all) that lead up there.

Perhaps Auchnacarry needs a bollard at one end...

West Town - will the 2450 affordable homes be the ones next to railway?

Frogston nice new school with houses built around it. Nico shops or pubs etc. But The Captains Rest is just down the road in Gracemount. Or is it a Tesco’s now.??

@gembo: There is a small group of retail premises at the Burdiehouse Road exit from the estate. The first one to open as a business was a travel agent - exactly what you need within an easy 5-10 minute walk from your home. It took quite a while before a proper convenience store opened there.

I'm pretty sure The Captain's Rest became a Tesco a few years ago (unless I'm thinking of the wrong pub).

That was the Captain's Cabin (then the Marmion, then Tescos). Also 'affectionately' called the Stabbin' Cabin. It's main claim to fame was someone being murdered with a shotgun outside it.

"West town"? - maybe it should be called "Fume town", or "New auld reekie", as it's going to be very fumey around there, particularly when the wind blows from the north-west.

"But hey everyone! Easy access to the airport and cheap holidays to get away from it all*"

New Edinburgh town with 7,000 homes

I'm sure they will all love living next to an airport. Perhaps eventually enough of them will complain about the noise level and force the airport to close. I mean, if it works for music venues...

This will be where the film studio was supposed to be built. Wonder where that plan went, eh?

Last I remember the film studio proposal had moved further east, in between the A68 and the new Dalkeith campus (where NCN 196 currently goes). That was several years ago, though.

@gembo: "There is a Chinese restaurant on the corner?"

Operating under the somewhat off-putting name of The Ming Palace, as I recall. (Might have changed its name since I last paid it any attention...actually, Google says no, it's still called that. Ew.)

@ejstubbs, yes that is the strange harling extension to modest house called The Ming Palace, indeed.

Will be a 15 minute neighbourhood. Easy access to your local airport by bike. ;-)

Number of flights into Edinburgh very high but restricted with only one runway for years now. Seemed to be a giant carpark for years.

I guess the affordable housing component will be hard up against the active taxiway and thus desirable for planespotters...

While the developments themselves are supposedly "car lite" (O RLY) any news on onward active travel connections? A decent connection from West Town/Crosswinds to Edinburgh Park or the Gyle would be useful in its own right.

Both sites sit on green belt land protected from most forms of development – and it will come as no surprise to applicants that this is a huge and unlikely hurdle to clear.

But they are hoping councillors will give significant weight to housing shortages in the city, and that this will trump concerns about encroaching on to the green belt.

But a report going before councillors next Wednesday has seen officers recommend that councillors refuse planning permission for the new site due to its being on the city’s greenbelt.
