The new bridge with the tram is now open and the link back to Carrick Knowe (an unconnected stub for YEARS) is functional -

The path to Balgreen seems to be complete (though I suspect it's still blocked at Balgreen Road. Will probably check to today. Anyone used new path yet?

Will be a fine bike v tram race track!

Forgive my ignorance, but how far does it go west? (I fancy a cycle along it.)

Also, please let us know if Balgreen end is open. I take it the opening is the opening just left after the bridge heading north-ish.

Just as far as the start if the existing 'Broomhouse path' - no other new bridges that added foot/cycle path.

Going to look at Balgreen end soon.

  6. Balgreen End (assuming you mean the one near the old Jenners Depository) still fenced off when I came past on the way to work this morning (around 6.25'ish).

Really want a run along there too as it's ideal for me on my way to/from work!

Is this on Cyclestreets, and if so, can someone post up what it connects?

I thought it's been open at the west end for a while? I'm sure someone on here (arellcat?) cycled down it a while back and had to turn back.

OpenStreetMap has it marked, but with a gap at the east end (although it seems to show a link around the west side of the allotments).

I passed this on the train back from Dundee on Sunday morning,i took a gander as its near my gaff, i noted that it is still shut off at the Balgreen Side very much so. Hope this helps a bit. You can access it from Carrick Knowe side however as there were folk on it. RJ

cb, I did cycle along it a couple of months ago, but I pushed my bike out through the building site end at Balgreen Road. OSM currently shows that section as under construction.

Used it yesterday eastbound, open at the western end where you go over the bridge, but very firmly closed off by at least 2 layers of fencing just past Carrick Knowe golf clubhouse. You currently have to exit via the short path to the clubhouse.
The workmen did seem pretty active just past the fencing so I wasn't inclined to push my luck.

Yes, can access past golf buildings -

But probably worth waiting a bit longer for proper way -

    Access to Balgreen tram stop.

ONE WEEK - that's all this path was open for before they ruined it! Last night, lovely smooth surface has been dug up every 20 metres, with a metre long and inch deep trench the width of the path appearing at each instance.

No idea what they are doing here, although horrible cycle paving slabs seem a likely candidate...

cable trenches to hook up the lamp posts? They may have laid them on the "wrong" side of the path for the supply cable.

The tactile strips are only meant to be used to indicate start/end of a section of segregated path. Not that the council or their workers have the faintest idea how they're meant to be used and have a near enough 100% success rate in installing them incorrectly.

Comments like "Will be a fine bike v tram race track!" may have persuaded them that speed bumps could be needed.

Indeed, speed bumps = "Will be a fine AIRBOURNE bike v tram race track!"

As BenN pointed out, the new path between Stenhouse and Balgreen (or even Stenhouse and the Carrick Knowe golf course clubhouse) which had the most beautifully smooth and even surface has already been chopped up:

The cutouts aren't evenly spaced, and aren't all the same length, although they all do extend over the width of the path. There has been judicious use of cold pour to seal near the edges of the cutouts.

I've just been scrutinising the planning applications for this site (08/1240/PA) and although the original drawings were approved in 2008 there was a variation in 2010 (08/01661/VARY) for re-positioning some lamp posts and OLE posts. But I can't tell from the drawings or reports whether what we see in October 2013 bears any relation to the as-drawn arrangement or the variation.

Pity about the trench balls up. Looks as though they plan to extend the path to Corstorphine along a currently unsurfaced railway path:

Don't know where they got two miles from in that article. The bit needing paved can only be about half a mile.

The entire length of the path is not even two miles.

@cb spot on, the bit of the path tht was the old railway is already Tarmac, the lower path down through the golf course is shorter.

Assuming you can take a bike on the tram you cold cycle down and hop on with your bike?

Can confirm that the trenches have all been filled in, quite nicely, with new tarmac. Apart from the weird 1.5foot concrete projections on the bridge to carry the lamp poles, it's a very nice bit of path.

Open as far as the gowf club. Took a film of the ride earlier. 2:05s from crossing the tram tracks at the level crossing to leaving the path at the club.

Looked good, when you turn off to the golf course the path going straight on still closed? That section through to Balgreen and murrayfield still not ready?

Love the creative use of two lamp posts as traffic calming measures between the guard rails! As if they couldn't have been put immediately before and after the rails or (shock, horror) on the other side of them. Would it have been so hard to put all the lamp posts off the actual path?

that, and the fact they are on concrete bases that sit proud of the path by a few inches makes them pretty dangerous. They could quite easily have been mounted on the central reservation part or built as part of the parapet. Certainly need some white paint around the bases.

I'm sure it all looked good on the drawings to the person who will never ever ride a bike or try pushing a pram or wheelchair down there

Rode the full length today! Open and surfaced as far as the slip road up from Balgreen, which has a subsurface, just needs sealed. Only bit that's closed off is the connection to Corstorphine path, which is currently a stub blocked off by the ubiquitous HERAS fencing.

New crossing being built at the end, remains to be seen if it's pedestrian or toucan.

    Video to follow.

I did this too on my way home after noticing fencing and signs were down this morning. There were works vehicles parked at the top across the path but I was able to squeeze through.
I've only just starting using the Carrick Knowe path to get to Broomhouse instead of via Stenhouse and am liking it very much.
