Following the posting of retro photos elsewhere, there seems to be a demand for 'the days before tarmac'.

I think we all owe a big debt of gratitude to those who were around "back in the day" and were instrumental in getting the paths from the state above into the tarmacced and (generally) tree-free state they are today.

"I think we all owe a big debt of gratitude to those who were around "back in the day" "

A lot of the really useful stuff was done by Lothian Regional Council which was responsible for Transport.

So, much of NEPN was done to road building standards - which I thought was overkill at the time and meant that not so much could be done (each year).

Meanwhile Edinburgh District Council was making 'paths' - eg WoL behind the Modern Art Gallery to a lesser (and narrower) standard.

That may well be appropriate for such places, but it's good that the NEPN was constructed the way it was given the amount of cycle traffic it now has.

One of the key people now works at CEC and is involved with ATAP.

@AKen that's the old Trinity station, at the end of the path, beyond Trinity tunnel, when heading south towards Granton / Newhaven.

Here's an interesting photo of a view that you couldn't see today, which shows exactly why the "ski ramp" is necessary.

If you can't figure it out, it's taken from the parapet of the bridge on Lochend Road, looking roughly WSW. Easter Road stadium in the background helped position this one in my head.
