Indeed!! t'was cool last week, and then towards the end of last week and Monday it was lovely and warm - short Sleevs and shorts back out, but now BBRRRRR!!!! Its getting cool, arm warmers on and I'll be looking out my long bib tights for the weekend!

I'm not so bothered about the temperature - normally high temperatures get to me - it's the wind that bothers me...

And I've just rebuilt the drivetrain on the Croix, it's feeling great, so neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night will stop me getting miles this weekend...well, maybe the last one...

Yup, winter seems to be here. I'm 20 mins slower each day than I was a fortnight ago (or maybe it's those blasted tyres ;) ).

Still in shorts, will need longs next month probably.

I'd go as far as saying that today's weather was about normal for this time of year.

Time to panic buy winter tyres, lights and long-finger gloves.

So, temperatures are declining to.....the average for October. Ah well, the summer was nice while it lasted!

I was in full waterproofs when I set out this morning yet by the time I arrived at work I was wishing that I was in shorts and a t-shirt (although maybe a long-sleeved one!).

Funny - the bbc forecast for Edinburgh is showing temperatures higher at the weekend.

Get with the program kappers. Temperatures will plummet as we face a Siberian freeze with arctic conditions bringing chaos and misery. Just like last year. And the year before. And the year before...

I just wish this winter thing was predictable so we could all plan for it. Y'know, if it happened on, I don't know, an annual basis?

Yes, back to average for October, if you'd taken the BBC forecast last night at face value, we'd had 60mph winds from the NW, blowing us into town this morning. The reality was the usual blustery SW wind, particularly on the Bridge. Funny time of year for trying to get the right layers, first day without shorts and felt too hot but hands were cold (?). A steady stream of high vis waterproofs in from the Bridge is the sign its autumn. Watch out for those leaves covering track edges and verges, had a bad wipe out this time last year on the narrow strech above Cramond Brig.

I too saw lots of neon layered cyclists, including myself in my Mavic Vision vest. I think I just about got it right, short sleeved Helly Hanson and SS Jersey, shorts and arm warmers, with fingerless gloves. Cool until Dalmeny then ok to work. Usually come winter I'm either too warm or don't warm up before work.

I need a gillet, got poured on so had my waterproof on. Too hot. Before it rained I had base layer and long sleeved cycling top. Too cold.

I cycled to work today in shorts and t-shirt. It's always summer inside the torpedo. But when you can't filter past traffic jams it can get a little parky as you cool down, so I have to have my windproof fleece with me anyway!

Was sunny when I left the house but it had just rained so I was fully togged up.
Which was just as well by the time I got to the NEPN - absolutely chucked it down all the way into the west end.

Was wearing my gillet so my torso was nice and dry. Unfortunately, I had to get straight onto a customer phone call when I got in with absolutely soaked shoulders. Still not been for a shower...

And, of course, it's now beautiful sunshine.

Didn't they bust the weather forecasting service making the annual Siberian predictions as being one bloke and a laptop?

I was still in my short sleeved/legged kit today into the wind. Fingerless gloves meant my fingers got a bit chilly, but I warmed up half-way to work.

It's OK folks, the benevolent Minister for Motorways has provided more salt, de-icer and snowplows than ever*

    * for trunk roads. Cyclists and pedestrians can take their chances on untreated pavements and paths or in the gutter...

The Evening News forecast is sponsored by the wool undies industry. Unlike the Met Office, whose forecast doesn't really support the EEN story.

I definitely noticed it today, need to get some long gloves as my poor wee finger tips were distinctly chilled by the time I got to work.

@kaputnik, isnt that because central government is responsible for trunk roads and it is local government that looks after local roads?

Pretty chilly this evening! Maybe not frost in the morning, but could feel distinctly cool...

Windchill is a factor as blowing from north west so colder than the still balmy sou'westerlies.

    Blow the wind southerly etc

Distinctly chilly this morning right enough.

  26. Cold morning, but it was nice with not much wind. Still managed it in shorts and never felt too bad.

Chilly but nice and sunny this morning. Got my warmer scarf out, and gloves are no longer optional. I hope it is like this tomorrow, when I plan to get the big bike out.

If it stays like this for the weekend, it should be a good one - I love weather like this.

Shorts, mitts and T-shirt this morning.

I think the full finger gloves will make an earlier appearance than last year due to changing handlebars.

Chilly start this morning so, for me, it was L/S merino base layer and soft-shell jacket (for windproofing). Three-quarter length leggings and full finger gloves (for the first time since last winter). Felt fine with that, apart from a slight chilling of the feet.

Anyone got any good winter sock recommendations?
