I made the mistake of saying to a friend a couple of days ago that I'd managed to go the whole summer with not a single puncture.

Since then I've had several. Currently sitting at ratho on the canal with number 4. Think it's time I invested in some of those magic gel filled ones that seal them up. Anyone know if they actually work?

Make that number 5. Not happy.

    How old are your tyres?

I find that as my tyres get to the end of their servicable life, the minature flints embedded in the tread start poking through and I get a rash of punctures as a warning to stop being so cheap and replace them...

    Ah P.

You won't find this helpful (at the moment), but others may -

Always a good idea to examine inside of tyre to see if anything still poking through. Also to see if anything - glass, thorn etc - is worming its way through (easier written than done on a cold canalside).

The tyres are 5 months old, they are in fairly decent condition. I've had a look on the inside of the tyre and it looks like it could be what you decribe EddieD.

Its actually 4 punctures again, I got chatting to some other cyclists whilst fixing it and somehow was sufficiently distracted enough that I put the same tube back in instead of my spare. Is there any remedy for sheer, raw dumbness?

The gel works, but don't let the bottle open in your pannier, you will have much gel to clean up, like what happened to me.
