Any chance of a wee bit of a pin point of where to meet. Just on the roundabout?

"That was my first 300, and the final ride in my RRTY, which (subject to verification) I should have completed now."
Very well done. I don't think I could do a RRTY, the thought of doing 200km in the cold and ice - I couldn't do it.

    What is an ECE?

I was lucky that we had a mild winter this year. Even so, the rain and wind were challenging on some rides.

ECE: Extended Calendar Event. You ride to and from the start/finish as a (DIY) audax. So you can turn a 100 into a 200, a 200 into a 300, and so on.

There's a bench below 32 crows on the side of the roundabout opposite the Justinlees Pub.

Well done crowriver. I failed in my Round The Year Randonnur attempt as I took 3 weeks off the bike at Christmas and was not fit enough or stretched enough. Knee problem caused me to bail out at 130km.

What time did you finish the 300km in? I though with a 6.30am start you would have had to be back before 30 mins past midnight?

@DaveC, it was past 3 in the morning when I rolled to the final ATM. A bit slow, but incredibly still within time, just.

Minimum overall speed of 14.3kph gives nearly 21 hours to complete 300km. My actual ride did not take the shortest route, I was nearly 20km over but I didn't fancy the A90 from Forfar during peak drivetime nor the A92 from Dundee (for example). That time allowance meant I could have a few decent breaks, but I was pushing it for time at the last three controls...

Ah I couldn't work out the time limit on the phone when I posted earlier. This (finding somewhere open) is something we have thought about for DIYs of ours. We are probably going to do a 400 DIY based on a PERM this summer. Dalgety Bay, Berwick upon Tweed, Hawick, Carlisle, Abington, Dalgety Bay. This gives us the motor way services as we ride back up the A74, during the early hours of the morning.

Well I nearly packed in a couple of 200s in December and January as I was struggling with fitness, tiredness, the dark, rain, etc. "Somehow managed to pull myself together" is probably the most apt phrase.

Anyway you can always start a new RRTY campaign! ;-)

Didn't know if I would manage a 300 but I'm glad I did. Need to get fitter/faster before Tayside Transgression and Snow Roads though! (gulp).

This (finding somewhere open) is something we have thought about for DIYs of ours.

Aye, it can be an issue though takeways are often open past midnight. In fact on this ride I didn't eat much past 10pm, just didn't feel like it. A few cereal bars from the saddle bag and some sweets from the jersey pocket kept me going. Got really sick of sports drink after midnight too, made me feel bilious after a few swigs, though water was okay. Maybe that was the start of digestion problems I hear other audaxers talking about on longer rides? Also started feeling sleepy around 1am, though this only lasted less than an hour and I was wide awake again. These events don't bode well for an attempt at anything over about 350km, unless they're a passing thing like my tired legs at 170km syndrome. Services with 'real food' probably a good idea in the middle of the night....or pack some tasty sarnies in the saddlebag?

I popped back after innerleithen hoping to get a cracking climb. Turned into a slog - the wind was TOUGH.

Absolutely broken now. Good fun 100km.

Hope you boys had a good time with the rest of the ride.

Killer wind today, very gusty. After Innerleithen , cyclingmollie and I went towards Peebles, at first along the excellent cycle path then on the road past Kailze. At Peebles,we took the lovely backroad loop past Cademuir, the through the Meldons, to Gladhouse and back through Temple.

Not as long as we'd hoped but good to be out and with great company.

My aim is to head for Moffat at 7am from Edinburgh and be back to Ed by 1/2pm via St Mary's Loch and Innerleithen. I know the route fairly well so going to go for it early to avoid too much breeze on the 701 beeftub. Anyone welcome.

I'll probably try to head out that way at some point soon to get a few miles in. Might not be the same time as you guys due to various family commitments. See you on the MPTM on 5 April though...

@ArobComp that is a nice route esp given the wind. Have you checked whether the A708 between Moffat and St Mary's Loch is open? There are major roadworks scheduled with closures planned. However it's not clear to me whether the road is passable by bike and whether the closures are lifted at the weekend.

Other than that, I am going to think about it. My concerns are threefold:
    - ice tomorrow morning
    - permission from OH
    - keeping up with you!

Amir - I think that it should be ok for ice. I'll be keeping an eye on it.
I won't be going that fast and I'll tow you down the beef tub. IT's basically flat ;)

RE: the A708 I went through after the road collapsed and most of it was passible. Can't imagine there is any difference - at worst we might have to walk around a section of road on the grass. IU've asked in Audax ecosse facebook group to see if anyones ridden it recently.
