Not for me! I have been on a few and fear of heights now means I'm not interested! I like a view from behind something secure BRICK or STONE but I'm not one for Ferris wheels these days...

A GIANT Ferris wheel boasting enclosed pods and unrivalled views of Edinburgh at night is being shipped from Australia to provide the centrepiece for Edinburgh’s revamped Christmas festival starting next month.

I shudder to think what the CO2 emissions are for this particular frippery.

They tried this before, and Network Rail said "not over our bridges and tunnels you're not". I assume it's going to go someplace else then?

It's consideraly shorter than the Scott Monument, and far lower than the castle. If you want a good view youd be better going up either of those two. Or Arthurs Seat for free...

It seems a bit daft to be closing off the road for it when they've only just opened up!

Oh, I don't know, it sounds entirely logical for Edinburgh.

It just shows that pedestrianisation of the city centre is not that hard to do...

I'll bet you a gluhwein* that it's shut to bikes too...

(*although I hear the marketing types haven't invited the German Market this year, they're tyring to do what marketing folks do best and RUIN EVERYTHING)

It may be shut to bikes (fair enough if there's loads of peds in the way), but it counters the necessity of traffic flow argument against closing city centre roads to cars.

    Gluehwein?

Our extensive German Market is located around the Scott Monument in East Princes Street Gardens, extending down to the Mound precinct next to the National Galleries of Scotland. In the heart of our market you will find the Big Wheel, Ice Rink and a variety of bar outlets. In the lower section of the Gardens, we are excited to present the giant Christmas Tree Maze and Santa's Grotto.

Are "bar outlets" selling crappy Fosters/Kronenbourg as opposed to fine German fayre?

The altered programme is the brainchild of London-based Underbelly and Edinburgh firm Unique Events, which were jointly awarded a long-term contract earlier this year to organise both the Capital’s Christmas and Hogmanay celebrations.

Spiegeltent for Chrimbo eh? Trebles all round for these ubiquitous festival types!

German Market traders snubbed by organisers

"All but a few of the 33 stallholders that have traditionally flown across from Germany to sell trinkets and food at the foot of The Mound each winter will be missing this year, with many instead heading for Alnwick in Northumberland where they will team up with former organising firm She’s Gott It!.

The traders claim they have been priced out of town with operating fees soaring by around 50 per cent under the first year of a new partnership between Edinburgh firm Unique Events and Underbelly."

I suspect that what you really mean is that they are closing off NCN75.

    AGAIN.

    ******s.

“It’s losing a lot of spirit – it is getting more commercial.”
Ironic that a market trader complains about things being commercial...

TBH, my main concern is the lack of German traders will mean no bretzel, no feuerzangenbowle, and Kronenbourg 1664 instead of Paulaner. I'll reserve judgement until we see what's there but I doubt it will be anywhere near as impressive as the Manchester Christmas market. Seeing that last year was a real eye opener - it showed you can achieve something as good as the ones in Germany in the UK...

Don't worry, there is going to be a German Market, and it will have German traders and they are aiming to make it much better than it has been in previous years.

I hope there will be more space for the German market - it is always absolutely rammed when we go there.
