I'm not having much luck with my dynamo set up. First the bracket for my bottle dynamo snapped in half, now the bracket holding the front light has just sheared off above the bolt. Too many jolts over potholes I assume.

The light itself is excellent so I'd be keen to replace the bracket if I can (and preferably with something that won't break after just 18 months...

Not familiar with these types of lights but I am very familiar with having to bodge up better mounts for stuff....I'm assuming your light is like this one.

You should be able to make an (ungainly) mount out of an angle bracket. Seems the mount at the light body is held on by 2 screws, they should come out easy, allowing something like the slotted angle bracket to go under instead. Then the fork mount can be bolted through as normal, with the hole/slot needing drilled out to the right size.

Not pretty but it'd get it working again. Might be problems with vibration given the thickness of the plate though at least it's steel.

Sadly, bracket failure is pretty common with Philips Saferide and getting a replacement from Philips nigh on impossible so you'll need to do some DIY bodging.

I'll just pop to the shed to get a picture of my bodge...

I don't own a Saferide light but if I did I'd make you a replacement. I think Dave has one and may have had a similar problem so may be able to help. If not I do know someone with a Saferide so I can use it to manufacture bracket for you.

Might be worth seeing if something like this might fit? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BUSCH-MULLER-LUMOTEC-IQ-CYO-N-PLUS-FRONT-LIGHT-BRACKET-NEW-/130883267395?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item1e79402b43
A few of the gang have B&M lights so you might be able to get a look and see how the brackets compare at the next PY?

Looking at pictures online, it looks like the bracket is metal and looks like the front mudguard mount the B&M lights secure to? The alternative bracket is a handlebar mount.

Do you have a picture?

Smudge, I think Sally lives in Dumfries.

A B&M bracket would work, but I used the one I ordered to fit my rear mudguard instead. SafeRide reattached to handlebars with a couple of bolts, a couple of nuts, an angle bracket and a jubilee clip:

yes, I'm in Dumfries (although I have made it to at least one PY!)

Thanks for the bodge suggestions. The other half is pretty handy in the workshop so might be able to jury rig something along similar lines. If not I may be back for more help...

For those who do have Saferides and haven't broken them yet, it seems the advice is to add a flat washer to the bracket when bolting it onto the light, to spread the weight around. Wish I'd known that 18 months ago!

Here's what it looked like when originally fitted

This isn't my light, but mine broke in exactly the same way

The broken one looks like it's been tightened enough to flatten the metal, which would have seriously weakened it (unless it comes like that). There's this:

Ahhh good point Dave! :-o

Still, the world wide weird and a little bit of measuring should allow us to defeat distance if required :-) I have a B&M fitted to the Brompton with a low level bracket, I'll try to remember to have a search for its original bracket when I'm in the garage tomorrow night (fitting new bars to the Surly) no promises unfortunately, but I'll look!

@instography - they come like that. Here's mine fresh out of the package http://cityexile.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/dynamo_2.jpg

EDIT - ah no, I see what you mean about the flattening. I'll have to look at mine & see if it's similarly flattened.

No, you were right the first time - it's flattened out of the box so it's not the users' fault. But those lines do say "snap here".

Spookily enough, I suffered this exact issue the day after the OP did & found this site when googling. I can confirm Instography's suggestion of the B&M mount as a suitable replacement, and being local to SJS, also purchased it from them. The only modification is to prise the arms a little wider and re-use the bolt from the Philips unit.
Annoyingly, I had been aware of the weakness at the time of fitting (18 months prior), so the washer to spread the pressure only delayed the failure. Otherwise it's a cracking little light, and would recommend it, albeit with the suggestion of a proper bracket.

I read this topic when it first went up but didn't have anything to add, as the household Philips light didn't have a broken mount.

Yesterday SWMBO badgered me into inpecting her bike which was developing a rattle... lo and behold, the Philips light mount had sheared (exactly like everyone else's)

I had a spare mount from an AXA headlight kicking around. It was quite a lot narrower, so slightly tricky to spread it and also fit to light, but I did get it on and the previous Philips bolt then cranked it tight onto the light, so should be fine.

If this happens to you, just pick up any wire light mount (i.e. not one made of angular metal, which might not be possible to spread).
