  2. Good.

    I say this not because I'm a flat-earther who believes that the sky will fall in if all space on the roads isn't given over to private cars; but rather that I hope/think it will prove the opposite, and that congestion will go up.

    I've long suggested CEC should have a month long trial of no bus lanes and no parking restrictions, then when the city grinds to a halt issue a lovely 'I told you so' message to the EEN commenters.

    I heard this on Radio 5 live this morning around 7.30. Derek Hatton was on speaking intelligently about the likely unwelcome changes this will have on cyclists. Up to now lorries have, as you would expect, not been allowed in the Bus Lanes. He said, "as most accidents are caused by lorries who will now be able to use the Bus Lanes, he hopes the number of accidents won't go up".

    It is the bus passengers (and cyclists) that suffer and they don't seem to have much of voice.

    As WC says, hopefully it will prove a point and be scrapped after 6 months. Will be worrying for all if the trial is a 'success'.

    Indeed, lets just hope that the Mayor hasn't stacked the report to ensure the projects looks like a success; and no one is killed.

    Well the new Mayor must be a right nutter. Even the Tories support bus lanes!

    "Transport minister Norman Baker has expressed fears the experiment could lead to a fall in the number of bus passengers and cause more congestion."

    (except he's no longer at Transort...)

    @stiltskin, fair enough! Was there not a Tory Norman Baker too or am I thinking of someone else? (No, not Tebbit).

    Baker the education minister in the ?1980s? I can't remember his first name. Teacher training days used to be known as "Baker days" in his "honour"...

    Ah, no, he was Kenneth, I think.

    That's the fella!

    Bakers, Thatchers, we just need a few Butchers, Coopers, Fishers, Weavers and Hunters...*

    * There is a Hunt.

    You are all of course missing the main point - how much road tax do the folk on the bus or cyclists pay :)

    I bet that one was trotted out during discussions before implementing it.

    In some better news, the Liverpool mayor wants to create 600km walking & cycling network.
