On Cameron Rose's blog he is saying there are going to be changes to the QBC at Ratcliffe Terrace, however, he doesn't say what they are. He hasn't responded to my questions as to what these changes are going to be, does anyone know what they are?

why don't you ask the community council? sounds like they saw/considered it.

I had to swing by the southside on business this morning before heading into work.

As expected, illegally parked vans filled Ratcliffe terrace from the bottom almost to the garage, then again outside the supermarket at the top.

It's hard to overstate how badly this reflects on the council.

Can't they just pop a couple of traffic enforcement cameras on poles at these locations and start mailing out fines? Simple solution...

Here are my cynical ideas on what will change :

The double yellow lines outside the shops with the double pavement marks will be changed to double yellows with single pavement marks.

The feeder lanes into the ASJ downhill will have double yellows added.

Enforcement will not change. Hua Xing will continue to block the top of the cycle lane and view of junction from 3pm to 6 pm. (and 7pm onwards)
(Oh look, here is a random day, google street view, and there they are. What are the chances?)

Ommnicare pharmacy will continue to park on the junction.

There will be no enforcement of 20mph. There will be no extension of the magic red cycle lane paint.

I have now got the details of what is going to happen, and it is not double yellow lines as Iratesheep suggests.

No, they are going to extend the parking and loading bays on Ratcliffe Terrace and Mayfield Road, with additional bays on Fountainhall Road and Grange Loan. This will be paid for with £2000 from "the block funding allocation for Cycling Improvements". How the hell does this advantage cyclist?

I have PDFs with the details but don't know how to attach them here, so DM me if you would like copies.

Can anyone see how this fits in with Edinburgh's Transport Vision: Our Vision is that by 2030, Edinburgh's transport system will be one of the greenest, healthiest and most accessible in northern Europe. Yes more car parking is needed to make Edinburgh greener...

If they extend the cycle lane which passes to the side of the parking bays then it might be an improvement, since it seems that vehicles are going to park there in either case. You can imagine that wouldn't be a terrible use of a couple of grand (?) from the cycle budget.

    If not, then... wtf!

Didn't you know that most pollution in Edinburgh is caused by traffic that isn't flowing "smoothly" or cars driving round in ever decreasing circles looking for parking spaces? The only way to improve traffic, air quality and make transport more sustainable in Edinburgh is therefore to make it easier and faster to get around by car and easier to park outside any single destination you may choose. Enforcement must also be turned-a-blind-eye-to by the Police force as they've got important business to attend to like ticketing pavement cyclists here and there or picking fights with previously tolerated parts of the "entertianment" industry.

Apparently encouraging driving will not increase carbon emissions, no doubt using the same environmental impact traffic models as they will be using to increase motor traffic flow on Leith Walk. While of courses encouraging cycling as a means of transport will increase carbon emissions, by the same logic...

Not specifically about the latest changes, but I've blogged about the QBC more generally. Feedback welcome.

The Hua Xing should be paying for these changes.

    @kaputnik - Quality Parking Corridor - perfect :)

@russellelly you make several very sensible points. Good piece.
Here's one from me: I'd like to see the QBC blocked to motor traffic by bollards at several points, so e.g. vans/cars could get to local businesses but couldn't use it as a through route. The buses could either be re-routed onto the main road or they could trigger automatic bollards (which seem to work well in other cities, e.g. The Hague, even though the cooncil bodged them up when it tried them on the High St)

Finally a bit of pragmatic short term advice: I find it far more pleasant to commute up/down Lauder Road and across the Meadows, than to use the QBC.
