My brother and I (and possibly my daughter) are looking at a week's holiday in the Alps next year (for brother's 50th birthday), using one of the number of operators offering guided/supported tours.

    Any experiences/suggestions/recommendations?

Check out the Tour de Mont Blanc if it's mountain biking your looking for.

French alps? Fly to Geneva then round lake annecy? Albertville, Bourg st Maurice, val d'Isere? Can probably get you details of UK company running this type of thing near Bourg.

Lot of the mountain bike companies take you to the top of ski run with your bike, you go downhill and they pick you up at the bottom. But the one I am thinking of does tours.

Don't go before June as Lots of cols still closed.

I can recomend http://www.gastrobiking.com. I went with friends for my 40th and we did Alp D'Huez along with some local rides in stunning scenery in Vercors area - option to be accompanied or not. You can fly direct from Edinburgh to Lyon and Phil will pick you up from the airport. Phil is very friendly but gives you your own space, as laid back as you can get without going recumbent! I have returned twice since my 40th!
