Ped, cycle and motorbike casualties up on more or less static distance travelled. (33% more ped fatalities !?!?)
Car use failing to come down.

This is interesting:
Eighty per cent of accidents resulting in a pedal cycle casualty occurred in fine weather
and suggests this is because there are more cyclists on the roads. This suggests that the casualty rate is going to increase dramatically as cycling becomes more popular.

Woo, hoo!
The odds you'll be seriously injured in the next 12 months is only 7% higher than it used to be.

Why are cyclists disproportionately more likely to be killed or injured than any other road user?

Why are cyclists disproportionately more likely to be killed or injured than any other road user?
They are disproportionately more vulnerable than any other road user and spend disporortionately more time ont he vehicle carriageway than pedestrians do, and have disproportionately fewer facilities (i.e. pedestrian crossings) available to do so safely.

Lets face it, road users in metal boxes, secured in their seats by seat belts and surrounded by various fittings to reduce injury are always going to fair better than someone with only a polystyrene helmet on.
An increase in distraction technology available to road users in those metal boxes is always going to increase the risk of the user not concentrating fully on the task of using the road.

Yes, but... Unless the mortality rate of something is zero, then the more time is spent doing it, the more deaths will occur. The only thing with a mortality rate of zero is 'already being dead'.
The thing to focus on is whether the mortality rate per participant is varying.
I'm just being a pedant(with the intention of bombproofing your arguments in future fora), because this year's been bad, even through that filter.

"Why are cyclists disproportionately more likely to be killed or injured than any other road user?"
Because motorists are allowed to run cyclists down with impunity. It occurs to me that if you catch a ned in the act of stealing your bike the most effective way of gaining justice is to jump in your car and run them down. No debates over reasonable force and citizens arrests, just a simple sorry I didn't see them m'lord and the court will let you off no bother. If it even gets to the court that is.
