The "public" birthday is the 27th, but four years ago today I downloaded the BBPress software and put it in some web space and started 'playing'.

I'd already been using WordPress for a while so it wasn't too traumatic.

Decided on some categories - these remain the same and (I think) adequately outline the areas 'we' are interested in.

There had been some initial discussions with Anth the creator of CityCycling.

I'd been doing a CyclingEdinburgh blog but wanted 'more voices/opinions'. Anth had already attracted some to his on-line magazine and had a mailing list of many more 'potentials'.

Neither of us knew what would happen - but it sounded like a good idea -

Somewhere where people who happened to ride bikes in Edinburgh could 'discuss' things.

Other Scottish forums seemed to have stalled (or been closed down) or were very specific - racing/MTBing.

Spokes knew it was being launched and that it wasn't intended as 'competition' - and still isn't. I think CCE and Spokes (on and off line) overlap and complement each other very well.

What happened next was that a few people wanted to join in.

    Then more...

Now there is a reasonably mixed crowd of people with views who just want things to be better for 'cycling' - for themselves and everyone else.

I'm really glad this forum exists. I've not been on it long, but the amount of good advice/info has been really valuable.

    Thanks, chdot.

I'm with @gibbo, good help & support and a willingness to listen to my whiney bad driver stories.
How many people are active/signed up on the forum?

If you could bottle whatever it is that you've done right here, chdot, you could sell it worldwide and be a multimillionaire by the time you were forty.

Though I have noticed it can sometimes be quite pedantic (for which I am truly sorry).

wonderful forum - partly because everyone feels able to debate without getting silly about most things.

I thought that being 'allowed' to 'get silly' was part of CCE's charm.

(Some people call it thread drift...)

Like a swan I suspect that there's a lot of hard effort going on beneath the surface. Please keep up the good work CH.

Unlike a swan, I've never seen chdot hissing at people and dogs on the canal with his wings set in an aggressive display posture.

Wrong set of words from me 'get silly' - meaning personal and nasty about stuff....doesn't happen here.

    Thread drift? Hell yeah

"I suspect that there's a lot of hard effort going on beneath the surface"

Actually less than 'in the past'.

I haven't had to 'intervene' or close threads for ages. There is an 'acceptance' that 'views may differ' - "personal choice".

There were 2 or 3 occasions when people turned up and did the digital version of throwing their weight around. They got (digitally) jumped on.

In recent weeks there has been a small surge in new members, who have slotted in seamlessly. Must be the benefit of long-term-lurking.

Since 'Haymarket' there have been quite a few posts from people who haven't posted for ages.

This is another of the strengths of CCE. There are people on 'every day' and others who post occasionally when they have something they want to add. (Both sorts are valuable).

One person joined over 3 years ago and posted for the first time last month!

Apart from entertaining each other (and the watching world) 'we' - or more accurately various individuals and random(ish) groupings of people have been inspired or outraged into doing things - contacting councillors, organising random rides, alerting Clarence, flyering (etc.) to make PoP a success (and force for change).

    Long may it continue.

Really, my involvement is one part of the sum.

    Talking of swans....

Segregated Swanways* - just one of the many excellent suggestions that has come from CCE.

Well done Chdot, and all the other members for making the place what it is.

I've only been on for a couple of months but try to have a read each day. All informative and entertaining, with a friendly and helpful bunch of folks.

What more could you ask for? :)

Are we getting cake? Excellent! I presume on the 27th, but I must have missed the "where"...?

I'd bake a cake, except I've a stag on Friday and a wedding on Saturday (neither being mine).

But shall we go someplace for cake on Sunday?

Or beer on the 29th in the evening?

    Or both?

This forum has been a wonderful creation - many thanks to chdot. It has a great mix of usefulness, relevance, debate, motivating, friendliness and homeliness.

I joined in Feb 2010 - since which I seem to have made about 1000 posts. My first post seems to have been "But icy again ..." under a thread entitled "Bliss..." started by SRD. Strange way to start.

Oh - I think my way of counting posts is flawed - the number is greater that indicated in the "User Activity" bit of my profile, since each item may cover more than one post.

I think this was the first ever CCE ride (which I went on - one of two).
