Just got to give a quick plug to CandBSeen for their customer service.
I bought one of their 1200 lumen searchlights, err, front lights last year and for off road use it was brilliant (literally!) ( http://www.candb-seen.co.uk/bikehead-lights/cabs-02-series---cree-xml.html )
Well this year when I went to use it the switch failed, so on Monday I used their contact form on the website to ask about how I could get it repaired or replaced, within an hour I got a reply that they'd send a replacement and confirming my address is unchanged, Tuesday morning I got a shiny hew head unit *and* a stamped addressed jiffy bag to send the old one back in. Top service and I am impressed :-)

Bottom line, if you want a cheap(ish) light for unlit paths/trails (but not really for the road, too bright and not a shaped beam) then give these guys some consideration :-)

I have the same light. The now do a diffuser which I bough a few weeks ago.

But yes, cheap (as in less than half the price of 'branded' competition), and very good. I also found their customer service to be very good.

I'm satisfied enough that I've got their twin lamp setup for my mtb, smaller head units and no flash (which is fine as I don't want to cause people fits!)
So if you want to arrange an rv sometime I could let you have a look before deciding whether or not to splash out.

I've seen some recommendations for Cree lights purchasable via the Amazon marketplace for something like £17 or £18. However, good service goes a long way... I'll also need to check that they are selling the same package.

The only -ve on this light. The rubber band bar attachment is poor, last winter I spent a lot of time adjusting the light, especially in the wet. This year I did this, problem solved:

Rubber bands seem to work ok on my setup but I've seen it said on other forums that the Hope handlebar mount is a direct screw in replacement for the provided mount :-)

Anyone know of any of the cheap Cree lamps setup with a decent shaped beam for road use?

Yep, I guess if they were staying on the bike they would be fine. I have to park my bike outside so was removing the light every day, after a few weeks the bands started to stretch a little.

Yep, the Hope bracket was recommended by someone on here. I also asked C&B seen if there was one available specifically for the light and they said the would have one on their website within a few weeks. Doen't seem to be there yet.

I had a spare Cateye one so just bodged that. :)

Coxy, that one mentioned here now has a diffuser lens available so is ok on road. I haven't had complaints this year. :)

@Coxy, the only good beam patterns I've so far seen are the German (B&M) dynamo lights which are superb.

My experience is however largely limited to light's I've owned personally!

Haven't tried the diffusers (got them with my twin lamp setup) but will have to have a play and see what they do :-)

+1 for C&B. I had a XML T6 lamp off them that packed in after a couple of months - the wire pulled out the light unit and the connectors were breaking up. Emailed them and had a shiny new light within 2 days plus postage paid to return the old one. I also appreciate the seller being very open about the quality control problems they were having with the factory - seemed glad that I'd raised the problems with the wiring.

Interesting thread, and great to hear that there are companies out there who want to delight their customers. And look what happens? Potentially dozens more customers!

I just dropped £70 on a B&M Ixon, rather than £17 on an ebay cree setup. But if I need more light for the Dalmeny paths then this will definitely be on my list.

    Thanks for the post, Smudge

@BC I've got the same light from C&B and I do recall getting 2 or 3 of the rubber bands in the box...which I obviously put in the dreaded 'safe place' so I'll probably find them again in about 10 years. I'm still on the original though, and adding/removing it 2, sometimes 3 times a day. Wear and tear may depend partly on the circumference it has to be stretched round.

I do like your solution better...

I've been looking for a good light for the road bike to use on unlit roads and this seems to fit the bill, and with the diffuser it should do for urban use too.

How about more "enclosed" areas like the NEPN and similar cycle paths - will it be too bright for other riders on the low setting (with the diffuser)? I don't want to have to carry another light (other than my Knog for emergencies) if I can avoid it.
