New cyclepath in Dalkeith

To compensate for the loss of the cyclepath through Eskbank due to the Borders Railway, a new cyclepath has been built in part. It's not yet complete since a new housing estate has to be built on the former site of Edinburgh College. However there is a new interesting bike route (NCN 1) through from where St David's School was off Newbattle Road over to Woodburn at Newmills Rd. This avoids the town centre.

I went for a first walk down there this afternoon. It's very pleasant as a walk, going through mature woodlands presumably formerly of Newbattle Abbey. And there a lovely old bridge over the South Esk. As a bike path it will not be a great alternative for those in even a slight hurry - Abbey Road would be much quicker and arguably safer.

The new bit of path wiggles quite a bit and there is a fairly steep bit. At this time of year, it is potentially tricky due to leaf mould and mud on top of the asphalt. It's also popular with dog walkers.

So whilst it's a very pleasant walk and a very slow careful bike ride, it's not ideal as a major NCN route and less so for normal A-B journeys. There is a bike gate at the West end - possibly difficult for some - and at the other end there are some kind of metal system that I find hard to describe!

Anyway here are a couple of pics. This part of Dalkeith really is very pretty.

Where's the start / end points? Meaning to have a sniff round the abbey some time or another.

And the Abbey is worth seeing. If you can get a tour, the really old bit is inside. Worth going to see Maiden Bridge also - this is on the cycle path and there's a pic above.

Thanks for the pics. Is that first Google Maps link correct? It took me to Elmfield Court.

That's the one. The bit that is missing goes along Ancrum Bank then cuts through the not-yet built housing estate to Dalhousie Road. I presume that will come once the estate is built. As the Open Street Map shows, it currently goes up Newbattle Road to the dreaded Eskbank Toll.

The Open Street Map is now out of date (you can't cycle along the line of the railway anymore). In particular, the diversion past the cottages at Hardengreen is now closed. The path now goes just north of the Edinburgh College (formerly Jewel & Esk - map out of date) then swings a sharp left just south of the end of Hardengreen Lane.

Below is a picture of one bit of diversion. There are lots of sharp turns and a couple of steep ramps. The surfaces isn't great and watch out for dog muck. There are lots of signs saying cyclists dismount - says a lot about NCN1.

I hope the route is better signposted than it was when I tried it for the first time in the summer - I ended up taking a right turn around where the bridge is and ended up on the golf course itself! A quick ride along the golf cart track to a clump of trees to get my bearings and I was back (or rather off) course :-)

Excuse my ignorance, but does the name "Newbattle" reference a battle site nearby or is it derived from something entirely different?

According to this it was originally Neubotle, meaning new dwelling.
