"PLANS to improve safety at a crime-ridden city underpass have been put on hold after council bosses said a surface crossing would lead to road accidents.

Campaigning locals had thought the council was ready to approve work on a pelican crossing at the underpass in Calder Road, a move which had the support of the police.

But despite a string of violent incidents at the underpass in recent years, transport bosses refused to back plans for the road crossing, saying it would put pedestrians at risk."

Hmmm, could slow Laidback down on his Sunday rides out of town!

Well it's a question of priorities.

The occasional mugging doesn't matter as much as the thought of slowing the traffic down.

Of course a bridge would not show a cost benefit as the sort of people who get mugged in underpasses are probably not economically active.

A pedestrian crossing enabled roundabout might even make the thing safer for cyclists. I know the underpass in question, and it's a not a little scary at night, but that roundabout is in my experience also one of the most dangerous in Edinburgh. I've had three accidents, each caused by the car driver not looking properly before moving.

Not the sort of comment you normally see on Scotsman web site!

"Personally I think there should be zebra crossings every 50 metres on all roads, including motorways and petrol should be £500 a litre. Oh and the city centre should be one big pedestrian precinct."

"seriously - how on earth could we cycle with that?"

    That raises a serious 'issue'.

There are some signs of intentions to discourage car use/improve life for pedestrians in the city centre by adding pedestrian phases and extending crossing times.

IF this happens it will be interesting to see if 'red (pedestrian) light running' increases...
